government check- where to cash?

i got a check from the county i live in. its only about 60 or 70 bucks. i dont have a bank account right now though since i've been getting paid on a compcard debit/mastercard lately. will any bank in the county cash it for me? do i have to use a currency exchange and take the loss? i googled, but the answers vary widely. its drawn by a government agency, so shouldnt any bank accept it?

It has to be drawn through a Bank or other financial institution. It should appear clearly on the check or try Googling the routing and transit number and see what it says. Some may charge you a fee if you're not an account holder.

Some gas stations will cash it for a % and Wal-mart also cashes government and payroll checks for a fee.

No. I wasn't clear, only the bank that the check is drawn off of will cash it for you. So if its drawn off Bank of America, you need to go to a Bank of America to cash it.
