At home she plays with a long hair chihuahua and they get along great.
Eye contact training might help her build her checking in skills. Get some kibble or small treats, and have her sit in front of you. Hold the treat/kibble off to the side, and wait until she stops staring at the treat and makes good eye contact with you before you give her the treat. Also, when you are outside with her and there are no dogs around, practice recall (calling her back to you and having her sit) while she is off leash. The goal is to train the dog to always check with the owner before approaching another dog or taking off while off leash.

That being said, I am not a dog trainer, and these are just some suggestions.

In other news, I have my sister's pit bull here until Saturday or Sunday. Stoked to have a companion in the house for my pit, Luna.

Here's Rue now. 14 weeks old. She's been doing great.

Still has some days where she likes to nip at our hands if we're playing. And she can be pretty stubborn sometimes, but she's learned sit, stay(sometimes), leave it, and down so far.

We start obedience training/socialization in a few weeks. I think she's going to do great. I took her to Petsmart this weekend to look for a new collar and just to see how she did. It was so hard to walk around because so many people were stopping and wanting to pet her. She didn't mind though, she loves the attention.

An old friend of mine just got a blue female pit as well. Her name is Nova. She's a few weeks younger than Rue. Can't wait till Nova's up on shots so we can get them together to play.

My sister decided to adopt the pit mix, Grace, that she is fostering. Really excited to have another pit in the family. Mine is going to love having her around all the time.

This is Grace having a nap in the passenger side foot well:

Not sure. She's from the shelter, so we don't have her breeding info. We think she's part boxer (she does the boxer bounding run thing at the beach) or bull terrier because of her ears.

Having a BBQ this Saturday with my sisters and cousins. My cousin is bringing her Staffordshire, and my sister is bringing Grace (pictured a few posts up). Of course, Luna will be there, too.

Here are a couple pics of Luna that I've taken recently.

My brother had to have his pitbull put down last week. He was always a good dog, great with kids and loved everybody. Then last week he was acting strange all day and when my mom went to give him water he attacked her. Messed her arm up pretty good.

Might be getting myself a bully soon, either a pup or a youn'un from the pound or the no-kill shelter. I'd adopt older, but we have a cat and other dogs and I want to make sure the dog is socialized with other animals and people properly.

Stay tuned.

No trip to the no-kill shelter today. Decided to postpone a few days to a week to see if there were any puppies/younger dogs locally that needed a home.

Call me an *******, but my logic for wanting a younger dog/pup is this: I don't know what kind of environment an adult/older dog has been in, or anything about their breeding. Since I know that any dog I adopt would NEED to be good with people, would eventually be left alone while I'm at school or work, and NEEDS TO BE OKAY AROUND OTHER ANIMALS (I live at home, on a ranch, and we have three other dogs, a cat, and some livestock), I have come to the conclusion that dog training, socializing, and social visits to friends' houses (friends with kids and dogs) are necessary. I can't predict how an older dog will react...

Does that make me bad? I mean, if I had the time, money, and space, I'd rescue several dogs from the pound/shelter instead of just one, but until I win the lottery or retire, a pit rescue/foster sort of thing is out of the question.. and I feel horrible about it since I know the older dogs aren't adopted out nearly as quickly/often.

Older dogs can get along with other animals through training, even if they are animal aggressive at first. You would have to train a puppy, regardless of whether he/she was dog aggressive, so you could have an older dog that is already trained in most ways, but that you have to train to be sociable. It's really a trade off, so it comes down to which you would rather have/adopt.

Puppies are fun and cute, but dang they are a ton of work. Really make sure you have the time to devote to training even one puppy if you go that route.

Anyone have any tips on how to get my pup to bring the ball all the way back to me when playing fetch? She brings it back, but doesn't like to give it up, so she likes to try to get me to chase her for it.

The past couple days, I have been just waiting until she stop pacing when she brings it back then slowly walking towards her while saying, "Leave it," or, "Stay," etc. Most of the time she lets me get close enough to get the ball from her, but she still wants me to chase her.

Eventually, I just want her to bring the ball right to me and drop it.
