Interesting theory, but no.

That's something I love about the series. A story like that could be totally true.

Nah. Interesting observation, though.

I don't usually go overboard like this, but I would say these books are the Lord of the Rings of our time. Personally, I found LOTR incredibly dry and much harder to read than what we have so far of A Song of Ice and Fire.

I agree. I have no problem whatsoever with his writing. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. And I think LOTR is objectively drier, because Tolkein isn't as much a novelist as he is a linguistics professor, whereas Martin is a novelist and author.

I'm actually kind of glad, then. That was just another storyline I'd have to keep track of.

I agree. The thing about books/series like this is that they're such a big world things like that can happen SO early and you never catch it til later (unless you over analyze everything because you had just watched the entire thing in 2 days). Especially since they're numerous books in so a lot of the things you don't catch on to normally DO actually exist so early because they want to put a tiny bit of fan service to what's coming.

Man, almost everyone that's talked to me about the books has taken my apathy towards them almost like an insult. It's like I've just run over their dog or something. Usually, it's on par with either, "You just must not have understood it" or "you just don't appreciate good literature."

I understood it well enough. It wasn't all that complex or subtle. It's just that I've read better fantasy from better writers. I do enjoy the plot (although having finished GoT with no resolution to any of the story arcs it is a bit irritating), but the characters are all static cardboard cut-outs.

But that's why I consider myself a fan of the series. It's the plot (albeit with some tweaks), and a little more life breathed into some of the characters, without all that repetitive introspective. Tyrion Lannister and Jorah Mormont are done superbly well, and even Catelyn Stark didn't make me grind my teeth as much.

And the production value has been phenomenal. The score is some of the best I've heard on TV. Not quite as good as BSG, but pretty ****ing close.

I'm really looking forward to ACoK

I'm assuming you're talking about people outside of this thread, because I don't see anyone here that sounds offended at your opinion of the books. Seems to me like it started off with a few people saying that they found the books to be too dry/long-winded, and then a few people said that they actually like the books. No one seems particularly slapped in the face.

I think that attitude can be seen within any cult following.

Just read that HBO Go is coming to Xbox 360 April 1st as well, so hopefully I'll be able to use my parents HBO subscription to use that.

There is so much **** about this show I want to talk about and can't because it's from the books and won't happen for like 3-4 more seasons.

I googled two ****ing words and the google blurb alone spoiled a major part for me. I've stopped reading the book series halfway through Clash of Kings (couldn't get into it) but I am still looking forward to season 2.
