New To Photography

So I've always wanted to pursue the hobby of photography, I started with a Canon Eos Rebel Ti film camera, learning the basics and taking some good basic photos utilizing the basic photog elements.

I have just recently picked up a Nikon D100 to start digital photography. I got a good deal on an unmolested body, and a LNIB Quantaray 70-210mm lens.

I just wanted to know what is the best/most popular forum i should join?
Can i Safely Edit Photos on a Apple IBook G4( with no speed or lag problems)?

What is the best free photo editing software i can get for free, (or photoshop for free).

I want something that can add a little HDR.

Thank You

If you want to be told that youre awesome go to photos on the net
If you want to learn to be awesome youll stay here.

You might have a little bit of speed issue but a g4 should do most operations.

Check out the software called "GIMP" it has some good utinsils like curves and such that will let you mess around a little, im sure theres a way to do hdr with it, if you wanted to go that route.

please dont do HDR....or selective color.

POTN has a TON of useful information if you can get past the fact that every picture ever posted on that website is "Fabulous, just a perfect capture"

Can you give some more information on the iBook? How much RAM, what's the CPU speed? How large is the HD? The problem you're going to run into with an iBook G4 is keeping current. While you can run Tiger and Leopard, the machine won't be able to handle Snow Leopard and you'll be forced to use older versions of software.

POTN is Canon-centric, so some of the terminology and technical minutia will be irrelevant to you. The forum in general can be a little grating after a while, especially the threads about people waffling over gear. Don't get caught up in that.

I'd recommend looking at photo.net and fredmiranda.com for more forums. You should really just lurk at those places for a while and soak up all the information you can.

For technical/spec BS: dpreview.com (Which also has a forum), the-digital-picture.com, photozone.de.

Also take a look at bobatkins.com, robgalbraith.com, photonotes.org, luminous-landscape.com (with a grain of salt) and kenrockwell.com (with a metric ton of salt).

But i will take all your advice, as for the Ibook i will ge specs later. All i really wanna use it for is picture editing, and basic web browsing.

gimp is the best free one, dont worry so much about your computer specs. Ive edited on some pretty beat to **** macs that had maybe a gig of ram and sometimes is takes a bit to do something, but it will still work.

My advice is just go shoot, and keep shooting. Its digital, you dont have to worry about ****ing up and wasting money on film, worst case you delete it. Also, unless you know what all the settings mean, iso, aperture, shutterspeed and why they are important (im assuming you do since you shot film) go buy a intro to photo guide and learn the science of photography. So many things outside of the green box have an effect on your photo and its important to understand the effects of focal lengths, apertures and other things on your final photo.

Also, good HDR photos are the ones where you cant tell at first that they used the technique. It has become one of the most overused things in photography and a lot of mediocre shooters use it to hide substandard photos. Its along the smae lines as selective coloring, or faking tilt/shift effects. Sometimes it can work very well, but 99% of the time it ends up looking like a visual abortion.

You can do HDR, selective colour and the like but it wont stop us or others from judging you negatively because more often than not it does look amateurish. However I like to think almost any technique or style can look good if you keep working at it and try to do it correctly

Thanks so much for the information, and yes i know what the settings mean, ive been absorbing knowledge and im enrolled in a Photo Class at school.

I got the d100 because it was cheap, and i wanted to get a full understanding of the settings and terminology before i buy a high-end dslr.

So Im grateful for all of the answers to my questions, alot of people out there are snobs sometimes.

I will be shooting alot and if any of you can help judge my photos and give some slight critique id like that, Pm me and ill send you my flickr.

Also i like the fact that the nikon D100 has its own internal motor, for a cheap photographer who cant afford all of the high end AF-S lenses, I can use some older lenses that will help produce a great image. So i will be picking up a few bargain lenses over time.
