We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."
They called it the greatest discovery in human history...
In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars. The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time.
The civilizations of the galaxy call it... MASS EFFECT.
2184 CE, in the wake of Sovereign's defeat, the threat of the Reapers has largely been dismissed by the Council as insubstantial. The Battle of The Citadel laid primarily upon the rogue Spectre, Saren, and the Geth army he recruited with tales of these so called, sentient machines, from Dark Space. Much has been done to rebuild, but little has been learned.
While scouring nearby systems for remaining hostile geth forces, the Normandy is attacked and destroyed by an unknown assailant. Most of her crew and personnel escaped with their lives, but Shepard is among the handful lost when the ship went down.
With Shepard gone and the mission abandoned, the looming threats go unchecked. Waiting for the opportunity to emerge from the cold depths of space.
