A 6.0 is great for dd use, maintain it and don't run a tuner at the max setting with out the supporting mods and it'll be fine.

As far as gen1's go I'd go cummins for sure and I'm a ford guy.

I DD my 6.4 and love it. Your right foot will determine how long your head bolts last before they stretch and blow a HG. A 6.0 and the proper deletes and headstuds will last forever. The 5r tranny is by far the best stock tranny and should last a long time.

Going to look at an 05 f250 tomorrow afternoon. 70k miles and the truck is super clean. Really hope they have it's service history. Wish me luck boys.

Pull the oasis report on it before you offer any money. It will show the previous owners problems

edit: for daily driving
I wouldn't buy a 6.0 unless egr delete, head studs, oil cooler upgrade has already been done. My buddies 6.0 is sitting in my driveway currently in pieces.

What and why?
89-91 first gen cummins didn't have overdrive. I had a 89, top cruising speed was about 70 mph tops. Fastest I ever went in it was right at 90, foot to the floor lol. Loved that truck. OBS powerstrokes are good trucks. too. Really just depends on what you like. 12v cummins are cheaper to get power out of compared to a 7.3 powerstroke.

Here is my old first gen.

It don't matter what you do to a 6.0 tuner wise, egr and oil cooler problems are straight from the factory. Poor maintenance over the years from previous owners is what kills them. High HP tuner is what kills the head gaskets on them though.

Yes, if the repairs were done at a ford dealer..

In other news, I recently picked up a 98 jetta tdi 5spd, fairly cheap.

Passed on the 05. Pulled the oasis report and it and the PO had it serviced religiously, just non of the recalls done. Went to start it and it had trouble starting up, blew a ton of white smoke out of the exhaust and ran like ***. On to the next.

Very nice. Yeah I hear ya bud. I had a trade in the works for a Monster Stage 2 VP & Redline box that Monster Pump Mike matched to the pump. My storage unit ended up getting broken into though. They stole my pulling wheels/tires, my practically new set of General Grabbers, the gauges out of my truck, the Redline box I already had, and the control pod to my Adrenaline. So yeah, my 01 is on the back burner for now.

I did buy a 4" Superlift and some wheels and tires for my 06 though.

That's ****ty, nothing worse then thieves.

My plans have changed again. haha. I'm going to run my truck this summer as mentioned above. Then come next winter i'm going to use that 62 and put it over a s475 with dual CP3's and some 100 horse injectors from Exergy. That should net me a easy 700 horse.

It's just about clutch time for me. It's starting to slip if you roll on the throttle to hard.

I wish I had a 6 sp. it's damn near impossible to find a 6.4 with a manual. I'm slowly buying parts for my build. Dual k16s, 100 over nozzles, 66/88 compound setup and supporting mods. Should be a pretty decent dune truck when done.

thinking about pulling the trigger on a diesel truck when I get back to the states. I don't have a need for a 3500 or F-350 so right now it's between an F-250 or a 2500 from GMC or Chevy. I like the proven combo of the duramax and allison but I was curious what people's thoughts are on the newer SDs with the 6.7.

in what aspects is a solid front axle better than an IFS? And what about the Allison is terrible in stock form? We're talking brand new trucks also. I'm debating between a very well optioned 2014 F-250 Lariat(62k sticker price) with a 6.7 or a well optioned 2014 2500 6.6.

If you're ever going to put a plow on it or if you want to put oversize tires on it, go with the Ford. The solid front axle really lends itself well to those applications.

If you're going to do a lot of highway towing then I would swing towards the GM
truck. They tend to do well with ride quality and fuel economy.

The biggest deal killer for me with GM is that monster DEF tank hanging off the side. It looks terrible and it's in the perfect spot to get destroyed off road (which would shut down a stock truck).

With that in mind, either truck is good to go. Ford finally got their **** together with the 6.7 and GM, even though they still use an IFS, they beefed it up substantially when they went to the new chassis. Really helped to eliminate a lot of the major complaints about both manufacturers.

Now most of the complaints are related to emissions equipment, but that's all diesels. Make sure you read up on how to maintain modern diesels. These trucks are more complicated than they used to be. Most of the major headaches you read about are from people doing stupid **** (using the wrong oil/antifreeze, putting DEF or gas in the fuel tank, not maintaining the fuel system, etc).

so it sounds like I need to test drive both and see which one I like better... Too bad there isn't a dealership in Afghanistan. Thanks for the help.

If you plan on doing any simple mods (Intake, tune and exhaust) the Allison has an extremely high chance of going into limp mode. If the truck will be used mainly on the road the duramax will be perfect. The ifs is amazing on the highway. If it will spend most of its time off road the solid axle in the 6.7 will be better. If you can hold out for a while the next version of the ford 6.7 will be out.
Each vehicle does have their problems though. The rods are tiny in the 6.7 and the fuel mileage is way less than what was claimed. The 2015 will have larger nozzles, hpfp and turbo. The 6.6 has that monstrous def tank hanging low. There are very few options tuning wise to rid the truck of all emissions equipment.

Yeah, I read up on the Allison and it doesn't like a lot of extra power because of how they programmed and designed it to shift. I don't think I'll lift it and put a set of larger tires on it. I'd be almost entirely a highway truck and one of the first tasks will be to haul a car from Cali to Louisiana. I could wait a little while but it looks like people are trying to clear out their 2014 HD trucks. I can get a 2014 6.6 Silverado LT for almost 11K off MSRP and one dealership was able to knock over 11k off of a 2014 6.7 F-250 Lariat. I definitely want to throw a tune on the truck to boost the power and fuel economy a bit though.

Once built the Allison is the best out of the big three diesel trucks. With that being said the 6r140 in the 6.7 is the best stock tranny by far. It's so smooth.
