Take the VIN to a local GM dealer and see if their records indicate an injector change... might possibly be able to post it on dieselplace.com and get the info there. If I was going to get a maxipad, I myself would prefer an LB7 and nowadays a lot of trucks have had the injector issue corrected.

Have the opportunity to buy a buddy's 2001 F350 from him. It's a 2WD, 4 Door, 8 foot bed diesel. What would be a fair price to offer him? Has around 200k miles. I have drove it and it feels pretty solid.

Looked at 2 Chevy's today - one was 2001 and other was a 2005. The 2001 had rust in the wheel wells, a few quarter-sized spots on the hood and the chevy part on the grill was loose. It started well and sounded really good - fairly clean engine compartment. But the rust on the hood and the side panels (the 'bar' that runs down the sides) was kind of rusty too. It has 153k miles on it.

The other one I looked at was a 2005, same style and everything just different years. This one has 205k miles little to no rust in the wheel wells and some sort of bed cover on the back (comes from a metal box) that is where it had some rust spots. Right under where the cover 'box' was set on it. This one also was a one owner truck.

I like the 2005 one because the minimal rust and not a model that is "prone" to injector issues (yes I know it can happen to anyone but still). Thoughts?

The same 12.9k. Another place I stopped bought an 03 gmc with like 147k and no rust same color and would go for same price lol. I gotta check it out first bit if it indeed in good condition would it be better than a 05? And apparently has a "small" lift

I'm pretty familiar with them. I've seen them hold up to their fair share of abuse. What I haven't seen is a real high mileage 6.4, so I couldn't say how they are in the long stretch. The 6.4 has alot of potential to lay down some big numbers if you're into that kind of thing.

But in my opinion, it's just another V8 diesel, a ***** to do any real work on.

That was what I heard as well. I heard they can make big numbers but the longevity of them hasn't been really tested. They are also a lot more difficult to work on, and get terrible MPGs from what I heard.

I might just go for a studded 6.0 or a low mileage 7.3 if I can't find a decent 5.9 cummins around here.

I was reading somewhere that either the new 6.7 or maybe the 6.4 have weak crankshafts when you really start making some power... which has lead to some costly engine "repairs".

You absolutely do NOT want a 6.0... that engine was a disaster. I'd take an older 7.3 over a 6.0 anyday...

my buddies 6.0 is solid. Beats the **** out of it any time it's out. But it's studded/gaskets and such.

Is a one owner with 200k+ 6 year old truck say that it was used for mainly highway-esque driving or maybe that it was a hauler?

When I go to test drive one I should check the tranny by listening and feeling when it shifts right?

I'm assuming you're talking about the Allison right?

Check the fluid, get beneath the truck and look for any leaks, when you're driving it you can pretty easily tell if it's got a solid tranny or not. Get the converter locked and lay into it. You'll know right away if it starts slipping. It's a pretty stout trans. They can hold power well, until they go into limp mode.

Ok, and what do you mean converter locked? Lol. I'm looking at a 2003 tomorrow but I looked at 2005 with 200k miles and I know the engines should be fine (generally) and its the other things you need to worry about. It's stock so no amounts of super HP have been applied (presumably) but just wanted to know what I should look for in a quick do over.
