I believe most of the ranking (PSP I believe) is voluntary until you get to the semi and pro levels. Your team can enter a PSP tournament as a D1 team, but until your team have the necessary skill you may struggle.
I would suggest starting at D4 and evaluating your teams talent before you move up in the ranks.
Good luck!

Depending on the league or series you can start as low as D6 or D5. I would definitely start with the 3mans and work your way up from there.

We'll be playing in the Fox Illinois Summer 3 man unranked, which goes from unranked to D3. Hopefully after that the CPL

Start at the lower divisions and if you find it's boring and you're winning too easily, move up to the next level. You don't want to move to a higher level if you're not ready because then it messes your rankings up (if using APPA). I'm not saying sandbag, but just don't be in a rush to play say D2 just so you can go brag to your friends that you're on a D2 team when you guys are getting smashed at that level.

Ranking is not actually optional. Most leagues now use APPA to score and rank players. So if you need an APPA number to play in a league you can bet money that the points earned (everyone earns points no matter how low you place) will count towards your overall ranking. At the end of the season depending on your points you will be bumped up a division or stay in your current division.

Also, if you are playing an open class 3man, then any division players can play in it, and you might get smashed/it may not be fun. Try getting a solid team together and play at the Division 5 level.
