That's funny. One of my friends worked with a member of the All American Rejects (not indie, I know) at Taco Bell and he quit saying he was going on a tour. They all laughed at first until the next time they heard from him, he was on MTV.
I would defiantly say Local Natives have made it. Their album has had good reviews from all over and they're touring a lot. Saw them like a month or two ago and it was pretty awesome.
