That equation would only valid for constant acceleration and is neglecting friction, but an A for effort Pete.

You're confusing Vf=Vo+at and Vf^2=Vo^2+2a(Xf-Xi) by the way.

like I said, I haven't done them in a long time.

constant acceleration or not, there is still a relationship. it might not be exactly determined by that equation, but you can't add unlimited weight to a car and still go the same speed.

Your tires would blow out and your clutch would die but yes, it'd eventually hit 130mph.

Pete there is a relationship but when you do the math the mass ends up on both sides and gets divided out so that it actually doesn't matter.

eventually you would have so much mass the car would be unable to move...

like if you're on a bike you can go fine, then you attach a car to the bike and you're not going anywhere.

Theoretically you would still be able to reach the top speed. Realistically, no.

Yeah, you'd have to go about 24,000 miles.

Pete, that's a lack of power to overcome friction and inertia.

Inertia works with you when you're moving and the friction at that point comes from wind resistance which comes from coefficient of drag and frontal area.

inertia doesn't make you accelerate, it makes you stay moving at a constant speed...

since we are talking about automobiles, you might want to factor rolling resistance into your calculations.

It resists change period, which means it resists deceleration the same as it resists acceleration. Which means it's no longer working against you the same way it was when you're trying to get the vehicle moving to begin with.

already did.

mass is not the most important factor by any stretch, but it does play a role.

My fastest is 125 in my Cobalt SS/SC on a two lane mile-long bridge. I pussied out maybe 2/3 of the way across and decided it wasn't worth it to go any faster.

Because if you have a small mass (therefore small weight) it will take less force to accelerate.

I don't believe he is technically right. I think that rolling resistance still factors in weight, and although the effect is proportionally very minor, it does have an effect.

i was speaking more to f1venom.

when hammi throws 10,000lb in the back of his car he won't still be hitting 130mph, even if he has a 24,000mi straightaway.
