Get a VW hatch. I'm biased to the WRX wagons myself, but there's nothing wrong with a little euro-tuner car.
Or be hella JDM and get a civic wagon.

I'm going to quote this so you can't somehow edit the stupid out of it.
He's considering an Audi A3 or WRX.
And you tell him he should get a hatchback VW instead of an Audi?

Hey, I always hear people talking about audi's going derp with something critical. VWs, not so much. Atleast, I don't hear a lot about VWs.

vw and audi are the same thing.. most are the same chassis and same components.. etc..
im not sure why he thinks a stock wrx is such a faster car then a stock a3? to be honest id push for a 2001-2002 s4 avant, aka the hatch style.
i also think that if its your money like you say it is.. then your dad has zero say in wat car you purchase. if you pay your own insurance, buy it with ur money.. why can ur dad stop you? and especialy a "Deal" were u are into college and still cant buy the car you want? seems like ur a lil bit of a sissy? either way wrx or a3, still great choice

You think he's going to be paying his own insurance? I doubt this is really all his "hard earned" money either but I don't give a ****.
A+ for grammar by the way.

Since your a senior in Highschool I would say get the rex.
The A3 is gonna be expensive to get maintanece and any work done on the car as the tech has to be licensed to work on Audi Autos. Dont forget their parts have to be imported from Germany. My A4 costs about 120 every oil change.
The wrx is Japanese. Meaning parts are cheap and its easy to work on.
If you have the money and want a chick that is only interested in your dough..get the A3
Otherwise stick with the scooby

i like the subaru more anyways.
but for your situation, i say wait, the audi is going to sit at home for a year which doesn't make sense to me, but if you get the wrx, (and im assuming this is the car you want more by the OP) then you get to drive it when you get it. since it's the car you want i say it's worth the wait.

Wait for the WRX and the by that time you'll be old enough to snag an STI and not get raped on insurance. Then again I'm 18 paying 05 STI insurance...FML.

You have clearly never been under the hood of a flat four unless your doing a little intake or exhaust bolt on, its a ***** to get to anything at all under there. But it's worth it.
