.50 cal in the UWL

Last weekend we played at the UWL North American Championships. We played in the skills division. Desert Edge used .50 cal spyders almost exclusively for this division. In the 2 games we played against them I was amazed at the range and ability of .50 cal to get through the trees. I was getting hit all the time while behind bunkers that would have been perfectly safe to be behind had they use .68 cal.

However the paint just wouldnt break unless if his something hard like a hopper or lens. This put DE at a huge disadvantage and forced them to have to shoot what seemed like tons of paint. Just to get 1 to break. I think that 50 cal can only work if the velocity is turned up above 300fps. Or if a new shell is created that wont break in the gun but will break on soft targets AKA players.

Yeap, that just about sums up the problems with .50 right there. So, I'm assuming they didn't do very well, did they?

Yes we used the 50 cal guns and there are deffinantly ups and downs for them.
The paint is very low impact and very cheap therefor great for new and players that can't afford a case a week. It's great for speedball where it's closer to hit but very difficult to play in a tournament style woodsball. There is nothing worst then bouncing off someone's mask. I love how you can shoot forever without reloading though. I had a blast playing the heavy gunner one game just shooting like crazy.

That's not such a great start....

First, you have to hit your target, then you have to hope the paint actually breaks...this is why .50 & .68 shouldn't be on the same field together.

Why didn't they use .50 in the other divisions? If there were only 4 teams in the Skills then they automatically make finals, they didn't earn their way in shooting .50. I only say this because it sounds like they made finals shooting .50 to earn enough points to make it in.

I have a hard time seeing where you're coming from Yankee as seeing as no one said anything about making finals and they clearly state that DE went 0 and 4. We didn't use .50 cal in other divisions because we were playing the other divisions to win.

Yankee your way off base on that one. They lost every game in the skills division. .50 cal probably had something to do with that. They didnt use .50 cal in the other divisions 1 because it was a promo deal, 2 they wanted a chance to win those divisions. .50 cal would have ruined their chances.

Ok hold on let me clear some things up.

DE played .50 cal as a promotion. We did it in ONLY skills because we are sponsored by Eclipse and we use them shooting .68 EVERYWHERE else. Eclipse does not make a mech marker so we were ok to do it in skills.

.50 cal has a lot of potential and is a lot of fun. I agree with Davis in that .50 cal and .68 cal should not be on the same field at the same time. It is totally different.

DE placed 2nd in Open and 1st and 2nd in Tactical so our only reason to field a Skills team with .50 cal was to have fun not to help us place or get points for anything.

The Pro's
You can shoot a ton on not a lot of air
cost
size (hoppers, guns, etc are all smaller)
good for younger rec players (does not hurt as much

Cons
Harder to break
smaller mark
effective distance

you'd shoot the same amount i just mean you can shoot forever without reloading. because the hopper holds over 300 and a pod is about 300 i believe so you don't have to carry many pods.

Still really doesn't matter if the paint either can't reach the target or break when it gets there.
