from newbie to wannabe motorhead.
so ive had this 1992 ford ranger XLT for about 2 years now. its a 4.0L V6 in it, automatic transmission, RWD. 53K original factory miles, it sat for ~14 years, driven maybe once a month in those 14 years before i got it.
it is on its way out, the engine is losing power, the transmission is slipping, i have to switch the diff bearing and check my rear axle bearings... needs a major tune up and a new radiator and new hoses and new gaskets....
as soon as it dies, i want to turn it into a project. i had a 1985 peugeot 505 for about 15 minutes... and i crashed it. massive, massive fail on my part. i told you that to tell you this: i do NOT want a turbo/supercharger until i can afford a car later on in life that i can learn to drive/handle/control at my own pace.
rather than restore my ford to its original lackluster glory, id much rather mod it with mild horsepower upgrades, maybe like a diff swap, manual tranny swap, take **** out of it(rear jumpseats, passenger seat for example) to take weight out of it, etc etc.
the truck used to belong to my great grandfather who was a tinkerer like i am, he recently passed away in january of this year. seeing as how the truck was the last gift he ever gave me, id rather revive the truck honoring his memory and his love of tinkering rather than drive it till it dies, replace everything OEM, and repeat.
so my question is, what would you guys do to a 1992 ford ranger with a 60* 4 litre V6 to take it from ~155hp to about 180+ hp? i was thinking maybe a bigger throttle body(i wanted ITBs but thats only with a carburetor i think, cant be done with fuel injection yes?) better fuel injectors, obviously a tune up, and maybe a better camshaft.
laugh/flame if you feel the need, but ill take what i can get lol.

Throwback!

A ten horsepower increase is almost unnoticeable.
I think you're being a bit too humble, ST:A won't rape you, don't worry.
Anyway, the only way to get used to higher power is to experience it. Drive faster cars (or make your car go faster), just learn how to be responsible.

you could do it the fancy way, cam head work retuning it, with a exhaust system or you could not waste that money on a 4.0L 6 cylinder and just do a 5.0L swap and get the hp your looking for and a bit more, and have more potential for future modding.

exactly what i was thinking. i was thinking slow and steady speed increases would be great to work my way up the power ladder as well as learn to drive cars with more umph. seeing as how my truck is my main method of transportation, id be driving it for the most amount of time so id get used to the mild increases until i bought another car in the same horsepower range.

i was thinking of maybe a little revvy 4 cylinder, and supercharging that for an engine swap. still pretty up there in terms of horsepower, without getting raped in fuel costs

You'll enjoy a 5.0 more than a high revving 4cyl. Something about raw american power makes the hair on your balls grow faster.

The hair growth is a result of time elapsing while you wait for the tires to catch. Truck + lots of torque = lots of smoke.
