How many of you are engineers?
how many of you are engineers. Seems like nearly everyone is an engineer on here from the classes threads.
dont be a douche and vote for everything. I have it that way on purpose.

senior, ME. both of my roommates, also paintball players, are also ME majors.
pretty sure there's some sort of correlation, what with all the opportunities to tinker with stuff in paintball, the two seem to go hand in hand.

Why does everyone seem to become engineers? Is it because the high starting salaries?

It's a job that is always in demand, and that means a lot nowadays... though I'm worried that with so many people flocking to the field, that demand will be gone once we all get out into the field
Plus, when I applied for college I didn't really know what I wanted to end up doing (and I'm still not sure that I do, haha). I see engineering as a sort-of "scientific" liberal-arts degree, meaning that you can go on from undergrad to do a wide range of things with your degree. At least that's what i always hear; it's a valuable degree to have, whether or not you want to be a straight-up engineer.
Junior ME here, reporting in.

Frankly, when I decided to major in engineering, I thought the field received mediocre pay (say a starting salary around $40k). I didn't care, but then again each person has his or her own reasons and feelings towards the field.
I think part of the reason you see/notice so many engineers is due, I feel, to our pride in the field. Also, it can definitely boost confidence, as many people think you're extremely smart if you do engineering (You don't, at all. You just need a decent work ethic). But that's from my own observations. Could be totally incorrect.
Junior in civil engineering, but I will be specializing in structural/bridge engineering.
Edit: If any of this seems crazy, then I apologize. Exhausted and I have work again tomorrow (woo internship). This was done in, somewhat, haste.

if i hadn't gone with ME, MatSE would have been next in line for sure. i kinda want to take a couple materials science courses, but all the good ones have 4 semesters worth of prerequisites, and the hell with that.

Seriously, it was because I have been "engineering" since I was like 4. Lincoln Logs, Legos, Knex, backyard constructions, etc. While this doesn't really make anyone fit to be an engineer, since engineering at the collegiate level is mostly math/science, I am also very math/science oriented. I've pretty much known I was going to be an engineer for as long as I can remember.
Then I decided to major in electrical because it was the one I knew the least about, and it was the most interesting to me.
I certainly wouldn't say everyone does engineering. A lot higher percentage of people you run into online will be engineers though, since engineers are into computers. I'm pretty sure my school (Virginia Tech) only graduates less than 100 electrical engineers every semester or so. People are scared of electrical engineering though, every ME I have ever talked to absolutely hates it, so maybe it graduates a lot more ME's.
