Calorie usage vs time spent awake.
Technically, wouldn't a person need less calories to maintain muscle if they wake up at noon rather than someone who wakes up at 8am?

What? That doesn't make any sense. You need more calories as someone who lifts because obviously you expend more energy working out.
Also, you need to get at least 8 hours of sleep, so if both are getting 8 hours..it doesn't matter. If the person waking up at 12 is going to bed later and not getting 8 hours, they will not build muscle well.
Lastly, the amount of calories that you burn while sleeping is negligible. You burn more sitting at your chair.

People that sleep longer die earlier.
5-7 hours is recommended, 8 is a pretty archaic number.
srs.

That's a news article for the study, I've read it in a few magazines too. I can't find the study though, so it's validity could be suspect, ha.

From what I understand the whole 8 hour thing is just arbitrary. A lot of things held to be true get disproven all the time, it's not such a revolutionary idea. I.e. high reps/low weight vs high weight/low reps yadda yadda.
I barely get 6 most nights so I still get to die, haha.
