Single tube dm using dm4 body

I've been thinking about this project for a while and just recently bought an old dm4 body off eBay to finally start it.

Before I go any further I wanted to make sure my approach seemed possible. This isn't all the problems I need to consider, but it's the main one I'm trying to figure out now.

I was going to cut off the bottom half of the gun. At this point I'm not sure I will cut off the air transfer tubes as well. (Any advice on this would be great)

From there I was going to find a grip frame (any ideas what would work best?) connect an empire relay reg to it. The relay reg would run air to a crcb solenoid and directly to the back of the bolt using tubing.

My main concern at this point is having enough metal to work with to tap the back of the body for the air to pass into the bolt. I know I need to weld up some of the holes, but does anyone think this is possible? Would this be easier if I remove the air passages on the body as well?

Thanks for the help!

I'm guessing that you are planning on making this macroless as well?

If you are planning on going your route I would definitely keep the air transfer tubes. However the marker will kick like a son of a ***** since you will be removing the LPR, the only real remedy to this is if you were to redesign the bolt as well.

I've thought about doing this before as well

yeah, I'm keeping the right air tube that connects to the bolt. I'm going to use an axe reg and run a macro line from that through the grip directly to the bolt. Actually going to the machine shop next friday to finally start the project.

To combat the kick I am going to use a luxe manifold adjuster to slow down the bolt by restricting the air flow to the solenoid. Also got my hands on a CF bolt to keep the bolt weight down a bit.

doesnt have anything but the body itself.

good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks a lot man...really appreciate it. I'll update the thread after I get the body back from the machine shop

Update

Decided to go ahead and hack at it myself As you can see it's still pretty rough and I have a lot of filing to do to properly fit a frame onto it and make it look good. I am going to run out and buy a tap kit and loctite tomorrow tomorrow to tap for m3 threads and a 10-32 fitting. At least then I'll be able to test it out.

If I can get the thing to function properly I may pick up another body and have a professional do it instead of me hacking and filing away.

this will be crazy, so if you're removing the LPR what will the fixed pressure be at?

the pressure will be at 170 without the 530 mod (which I will be doing). I will be restricting the flow to the bolt using a feather touch manifold off a luxe.

What noid will you be running to handle that kind of pressure?

Just a heads-up, but your bolt force will be almost 3 times as much now. I would consider reducing the bolt switch areas by a substantial amount.

Ok. Thanks for the help.

I planned to use the feather touch manifold to help restrict the flow and slow the bolt down. Kind of just testing to see if that idea works in the first place.

What do you mean by "bolt switch areas"

He's talking about the area of the bolt piston where the solenoid shunts the air back and forth.

Dm's run a large area on the bolt sail compared to say, a shocker or luxe because they use smaller pressures.

Exactly. F=PA Since the DMs calculate the forward force at ~65psi or whatever the LPR runs at to get the P part of it. They compensate by adding area. You can probably add tape to reduce these, but I'm not sure. The feathertouch chokes flow to reduce the pressure build rate (just like the check valve in an axe).

Honestly, I'd probably sketch up a custom bolt and have Cliff or somebody machine it for me.
