US Army question

I am going to be going into the ROTC program next year at my college. I have 4 older brothers 2 of whom went through this program. All 4 of my brothers have been deployed in some way or another. My brothers don't really like to talk about the army or being deployed or anything like that so I came here to ask how much the army takes what you want to do into consideration. I want to do infantry like my brothers and I was curious what the process was like and if there is any words of wisdom that anyone can give me.

If you want to be in the infantry, don't bother with all this ROTC ****, just enlist in the infantry. There may not even be a war going on by the time you finish college.

For ROTC:

Focus on GPA and PT. GPA is 40% of your OML accessions. PT...well that's just a given.

Just want to say it ahead of time, but this is my opinion on being in ROTC and OCS. No offense meant to any Cadets or currently serving Officers:

I am a firm believer that Officers are more respected when they serve in the Enlisted ranks prior to going to OCS or ROTC. I also believe that it should be mandatory for an Officer to be Enlisted at least for a couple of years or have a deployment under their belt. I know that logistically this is not feasible as Officer's are of course in short supply, but a leader should be able to know and understand the personnel that are serving under them.

If you do decide to go directly into ROTC in college, make sure you don't come out of OCS as a 2LT who thinks they are better than everyone else because you have college or are an Officer. You're no more different than a Private at that point, except that you are now in a position of authority because you made a different career choice.

A leader is someone who earns respect by respecting those that serve under them.

You will have good officers and bad officers regardless of how they got to their rank. There will be **** bags who were prior enlisted and have had a deployment, and great officers that are fresh cherries out of college.

I very much support this post, our Platoon got a new PL a few weeks before we went to NTC this year, and we were in a "Fire Fight" in Medina Jabal (If any of yall were around FOB King or Denver you know which one I mean) and it was 2 Privates, a Specialist, and our 2LT PL. At one point her turned to us and just said, "I don't know what to do" We all developed a plan to get out, and our PL did get "wounded" but we all made it out of fake war "Okay"

It was really cool just to see him be humble and just plain put himself on a level with us.

Also I am still drunk from last night and this post took almost 30 mins to type up and spell check, so don't judge me!

Some of the worst guys I've seen were prior enlisted cause they acted like an NCO rather than like an officer. One of the best LTs I've seen has zero prior experience.
Quality of an officer is based on the head on the shoulders of the Soldier, nothing more or less.

Ciley Myrus: Being prior enlisted wouldn't have fixed that, he would've been the same person as an enlisted Soldier.

@Eagles: What do YOU want to do? You want to join the Army, cool. But what do you actually want in the Army? What is your goal? What are your desires?

good or bad, when you get a new pl you have to break in him just like a joe fresh out of boot.

As for officers being prior enlisted make them better. I would say yes, cause they know what it feels like to be on guard for 6-8 hours, then know what it was like to be a joe. So some and I say some will want to taky care of soldiers betters, then others just don't care. But to have a good LT you have to break him in like a joe fresh out of boot. And that where the NCO's come in to play. It is our job to train, and get the job done. And to get the job done on mission sometime you have to put a boot in the LT ***.

Can you handle the responsibility of being in charge of other peoples lives? As an officer, you will make decisions that can get your people killed. If you think you can't put up with that, don't become an officer. You are the boss and have more responsibility for a reason. Especially since you want a combat arms job.
