Returning to the game. What's up with .50 cal?

So I've been out of the game for a few years now and have recently started playing again. I'll be honest and say I have absolutely no understanding of this new(?) .50 thing.

I've seen a few posts here and players seem very passionate about the subject but I'd like to know what IT is. It is NOT my intention to start a flame war nor am I trolling.

What is with .50 cal paintballs and markers?
What happened that prompted this alternative type of play?
Is it the new standard and the future of paintball in general?
Is this simply an alternative play choice?
Is this new play style mandatory in tournaments?
Did something in the world of paintball change?
Is this out of necessity or out of monetary gain? Both?

Please, if you reply to this thread, stick to the facts and keep heated opinions away. I simply want to know more about this subject.

They are being sold, though not very well.

What happened that prompted this alternative type of play?

It isn't a new type of play, just a different caliber of paint.

Is it the new standard and the future of paintball in general?

No.

Is this simply an alternative play choice?

Just an alternative caliber.

Is this new play style mandatory in tournaments?

No.

Did something in the world of paintball change?

No.

Italia had a non-compete regarding .68 caliber paint, so .50 got him around it.

There are plenty of great facts in this forum, you should read them.

.50 was hyped up to be the Next Big Thing. There was also a lot of false marketing involved. People weren't too happy about that so it's essentially DOA.

In other words, you really don't need to worry about it
