Thread of the Week: Is having NEH play in the NEPL & NEXL a good or bad thing for NE?

The title says it all.

NEH is playing in the NEPL and NEXL this year. I decided to enter the team in the leagues after people (team owners and captains) asked me to and even offered to change the rules so that we could compete. I wasn't interested in entering a league to "steal" prizes from local teams who could use them (not that we can't). I was interested in exposing more teams to our team, to help our local image and get closer to our fellow teams and "fans" such that exist.

Now we are two events in (two or four, depends on how you count) and NEH is demonstrably a step ahead of other teams. Not shocking, really. I mean, we should be a step ahead. And I did warn people about this before we entered the leagues. I warned that we would enter a team we thought would win - we wouldn't have me and Georgie and other former Hurricanes 3-years retired on the team.

However, one person made the 'joke' to me on Saturday, "how much longer until you aren't competing here anymore?" and I've seen at least one comment online ("the Canes will eventually lose ") and now I am wondering if we did the right thing by NE and if the people who wanted to see us play in the league still want to see us completing there and if the people who voiced no opinion are happy we are there or, well, not happy.

So, the thread of the week is really simple and straightforward:

1. Do you play in the NEPL or NEXL?
2. Do you think NEH should play in the NEPL / NEXL?
3. Do you think NEH is helping or hurting New England by playing?

If people want us out, we'll look for an exit strategy. There are finances tied up in this now, so it may not be easy and it may not even be possible, but we will seriously investigate the option if that's what people want.

1. I play in both the NEPL and NEXL
2. Yes I enjoy NEH playing the league. You guys have picked up some of the top talent in the region. What better way for other teams to really earn the right to be crowned the best in New England than beating the best team(s).
3.I think NEH is helping. I know there are some teams out there that may be far from NEH's playing ability and some that are only a step or two behind. But really Jeff this event I saw you guys have to fight more than last. Teams are hungry to win and I don't think you are hurting at all!

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Having tougher teams increases the talent across the board. Teams need to adapt. I would rather get my **** pushed in that play in a fairy tale league.

YEs

You (NEH) have options to play else where right? well teams that dont like what teams are playing the NEPL NEXL also have options to play else where
I enjoy watching the canes and playing against the canes I learn a lot. Pretty much for New England you guys are the only thing we get to see in person localy that play at a high level. We all want New England to have a better showing at national events, and having the canes play local leagues is going to help other teams step up.
But my only complaint Jeff is that you guys need to come around maynard more and practice against Identity lol....

1. Do you play in the NEPL or NEXL? Yes, in the NEXL.
2. Do you think NEH should play in the NEPL / NEXL? Definitely
3. Do you think NEH is helping or hurting New England by playing? NEH is definitely helping New England by playing. Similar to the above posts, i know that most members on my team were psyched to have a chance to play against the top team around, since we cant get you guys down to matts anymore... And having NEH there is a good way for other teams to see what they should strive to be like in terms of organization. You guys set the bar really high, but teams are going to be practicing and improving that much more to try and dethrone you. So stay.

3. Hell no. If anything, it's helping. Everyone knows that they need to bring their A game. I look forward to every match we have against the Canes. I love the rivalry we've got brewing.

Hurricanes played excellant this weekend, no doubt whatsoever. Are you too good? Your 4 for 4 now, but I'm confident someone will be able to step up and knock you guys off the 1 spot this season.

Saturday in the NEXL you could see a clear and distinct line between NEH and the rest; your talent pool and the team's experience in xball shows. Bloodline was able to give you guys a scare though and I think that shows that teams are ready and willing to keep playing you.

Sunday's MLP play was similar, but having you guys beat us in 60secs in prelims was more of "we messed up" rather "they are too good", which proved true when we were able to beat you in the finals. You are the best competition in 7man, I only wish we had the opportunity to practice against you before the events.

NEH is helping ,with the Canes playing in the league is great for NE because that is showing other people that the league must be good if the canes are in it , and it is also helping by having more competition in the league

There is no doubt in my mind that the Canes playing is a good thing for the rest of the teams in the league and for NE paintball in general. I wish 187 was playing again this year for the same reason, they are another top level team in the area. Any serious team or player wants to knock off the top team(s). I can remember when I first started playing always getting psyced up to play the best teams, and doing everything I could to make sure my team was prepared to try and win against those teams. I agree with Overweightangel that the Canes saw more resistance this tournament than last and this will continue throughout the year as teams will get better and bring their A-game when playing them. I don't think the Canes will win every event this year, its almost impossible to do. I don't think its ever been done before.

Agree with all of the above! You are encouraging teams and players to up their game and its very noticeable from event one to two!

I was among those who back in winter said I would vote on whatever rule changes would be needed to get Hurricanes into the NEXL and I stand by that. We've now played you both events in a win or go home match and it couldn't be better. Sure we try to take that last point and have a little fun, but until that point we are trying and it's a great experience for my guys on the field AND for myself and Eric trying to figure some way to maybe catch you off guard. I'll say right off the bat we've got a long long way to go to be able to win a match, but getting to gauge ourselves against the best is worth it and only creates the drive for improvement, at least in our instance, and if that means we're battling for second place for the time being, that's ok.

1. Do you play in the NEPL or NEXL? NEXL
2. Do you think NEH should play in the NEPL / NEXL? Yes, I was one of those captains asking and offering to change rules to make it happen.
3. Do you think NEH is helping or hurting New England by playing? Helping

I don’t know about everybody else but I play for competition and to play the best. We had a pretty solid draw at Event 2. No easy team. We worked through it and made finals 3-0 and played the Canes. The Canes clearly demonstrated where the bar is set for New England paintball and beat our *****. We felt great going into that Canes match we were confident in putting up a fight. Confidence alone won’t win matches we need to get better. That message was loud and clear. I think it gave my team some motivation, a kick in the ***. Without them there to give us a reality check your head can get big and you can feel your already at the top and don’t need to work. If the top team in the region removes itself the competition dies, I think history has shown that. As a benifit while you guys are top dog you get a couple 1/2 off PSP entries and a little coin in your pocket to keep you comming back.

EDIT: Also when the sidelines are rooting for the other team to win....that’s not because we hate/dislike you it's because you're playing the team we know better. I'm not sure if this thread is generated by the generally negative spectator crowd. Well thats just my opinon atleast.

Definitely, that was the toughest matches we've had at all the events, bloodline matches have been really close but when you look at the broader scheme of things it was our first match of the nexl and if we lost...we probably wouldn't have made finals and things would have been alot different.

In prelims we had a specific gameplan for you guys, you have shown in the last couple years as a team you aren't to be taken lightly and we watched all of your games and created a specific gameplan to target what we thought would be the best way to beat you...it happened almost too exact and that was the result.

In finals we were going for the same result although our plan fell to **** when we lost 1 off the break going to a key spot, surprise running to snake's armband fell off and got pulled, and then i got a 1 for 1... and that's 7man, thats all it takes, you guys capitalized like we have seen you do before and beat us. That was our first and only actual loss in NEPL so far this season.

Good job.

It should show teams that if they want to beat us they HAVE to do the necessary things to beat our team.

They HAVE to take advantage and capitalize on EVERYthing.

This means scouting, preparation, etc... If teams aren't as skilled as us and aren't scouting and doing the necessary preperation that we are doing I don't see many teams stepping up and beating us this year.

To win tournaments you have to get the edge and keep the edge on the rest of the competition. If you start a level under a team and then don't scout, create multiple breakouts, analyze situations, know how and when to capitalize on specific things that happen in a gameplan, then you shouldn't ever expect to beat that team or win tournaments.

When a team does all of those things and beats us and wins a tournament because the hurricanes have forced them to evolve their game and do those things than as much as i hate loosing i will be happy.

Many New England teams by definition are insane.

"Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is insanity"

I dunno if thats the actual quote but most NE teams have been going through the same motions when it comes to paintball and we fall every year further and further behind the curve...

We need to evolve and i hope our presence in the NEPL/NEXL has opened teams eyes up to this idea.

P.S. I hate to downplay the hurricanes prestige here but take a look at our roster this last nepl/nexl.

Besides me we have NO returning hurricanes players and NO players that have played above d1? The team we entered had suprise, sheridan, jeffries, josh, gibby, tbo, bj, tim maher, and myself. We aren't talking about a powerhouse team here, I played pro 1 event, big deal, tim played pro a LONGG time ago (no offense tim ahah), tbo played some nationals at higher levels, but everyone else is pretty much been playing nepls and lower level nationals the whole time. This isn't a superstar roster, just because we are the hurricanes doesn't mean we can't get beat.

The whole point of this post is to get NE to elevate their game, if you want specifics I charge mad loot...

I personally don't play NEPL or NEXL but I think overall NEH are doing a good thing by playing those tournaments. It will eventually make the other teams stronger and ready for that next level. I know if I played those two leagues I'd be more than happy to play against NEH. Kinda like what happened at NPPL Chicago were they had D1 play against the Pro's and D1 got destroyed but they definitely got some good hard earned experience.

We want to travel and help other teams out but at the same time we need to prepare ourselves for events. I know we have plans to play at different fields in the future so look out for us.

Also, sometimes we will give notice to other teams right in our forums if we are having an open practice so keep checking every once and a while.

Can't you also go to where the hurricanes are?

I think they have posted where they have been going to practice several times.
I think they've been to fox 4, camelot, riptide and maynard this year.
so i think that shows they are traveling around.

I havent played the NEPL or NEXL this year but have played in the past.

I think NEH should be playing

It is good for all teams to have something to strive for. I remember when we played NEPL back in the day, we always wanted to play and try and beat the best. There is nothing like playing the best team from the region, preparing for it and trying to beat them, it only makes you better.

One more thing is NEH playing Chicago??

Off topic, so let's not divurge but:
1. Yes. NEH is playing Chicago. I also know that 187 is playing Chicago. I am not sure which other teams from this area are (does LIFT count as "from this area"?)

2. NEH has practiced at Matt's Outback, Fox4, Camelot, Riptide and Maynard. It isn't easy being a 'homeless' team, and we are out there looking for opportunities just like everyone else. On my list for future practices are all of the fields I just mentioned plus Bennetts All Weather Paintball and OAC. It's just finding the right opportunity for us practice-wise, schedule-wise and wallet-wise.
