Ontrack data recovery error message

I had some bad luck with a hard drive that had a corrupt boot sector, so I had to format my computer. I want to get some data off the formatted harddrive, so I used Ontrack EasyRecovery. I found the data, and now Im trying to copy it to my external hard drive I:\, but when I select the drive and try to go onto the next step I get this error: "The destination path you have selected is on the source partition. Please select a different destination." I try my external flash drive and it works. I go into My Computer and I notice that the external hdd appears as a hard disc drive and the flash drive appears as a device with removable storage, not that I didn't expect that. How can I make my external hdd appear as a device with removable storage?
