Not sure which article you are referring to, but I posted my own scheme of how a 16 team conference could work out. I'll search for it

12 is ideal, but I think 16 could work

Superconference

Sub-conference A
Division 1: Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, Team 4
Division 2: Team 5, Team 6, Team 7, Team 8

Sub-conference B
Division 1: Team 9, Team 10, Team 11, Team 12
Division 2: Team 13, Team 14, Team 15, Team 16

-------------------------------------

Scheduling could work similar to how NFL scheduling works now. Every team plays every other team in their division, every year, alternating home and away. Then they play 2 random teams from the other division of the same sub-conference every year, as well as 1 permanent rival from the opposite sub-conference. That's 6 games. Add in 2 more games for other random teams from the opposite sub-conference, and you have 8. Let the rest of the regular season schedule be composed of OOC games. Then the teams with the best record in their respective sub-conferences meet in the conference championship game.

Another possible setup would be to include either one less OOC game or one less cross sub-conference game, and have the two division winners of each sub-conference play each other, and then the winners meet in the conference championship game
Add to this, once the conference champions are determined, all 4 superconference champs meet in a 4 team playoff

and splitting the pie 16 ways isn't so bad when you're dealing with seattle, portland, bay area, LA, phoenix, denver, dallas and houston.

Do you seriously not see a problem with a conference with that big of a geographic span? Austin to Seattle?

If Texas had gone to the Pac-16 (which is what it would have been), they would have only stood to make between 15-16 million, with no TV network, travel to Arizona, California, and Washington. They would be in a conference with USC, Oregon, Washington, and UCLA... all schools with relatively excellent college football pedigrees.

In the Big 12, they stand to make over $21 million, are the unquestioned king of the conference, and can have their own television network while also maintaining a tight geographic footprint and traditional rivalries.

All this was, as I've said all along, was that the Big 12 wasn't giving UT it's fair due, UT got tired of that, and needed to prove that without UT, there is no Big 12. They proved it and the conference survives.
