Make your own sushi?
Has anyone tried it? I know I would have to get either sushi or sashimi grade fish, but im wondering where I should look for the other supplies like the nori (seaweed) and any special fillings.

I have. It's way more work that it looks. Getting the rice just right is (IMO) hard to do.
They dry goods can be found at any semi decent Asian market. Even some supermarkets are stocking things like nori.

From what I heard (well off of TV from Anthony Bourdain) rice is the most important part.
What Americans tend to do with BBQ, how it takes years to master how to properly BBQ or some ****, goes for sushi. Like apparantly it takes 10years or something to make the rice perfect.

Better than you.

making decent rice is super easy if you have a rice maker, but only the asian type ones
making perfect rice is virtually impossible.

I would say that I'm a fairly confident person when it comes to the kitchen, but Im not sure if i would try to attempt sushi. I love it, but it just seems like one of those things that would just never be as good as if you went to a restaraunt.
Ive said the same thing about other dishes before, though, and turned out to be wrong, so i dont really know.

I bought a kit when I was going to do something impressive for a girl. I totally ****ed up the rice and ended up ordering some.

Its easy. Make sure to buy a bamboo rolling mat. Your sushi might not come out looking pretty at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

The rolling is the easiest part for me. Making rice that doesn't suck is still rough after five years of off and on practice. It's certainly possible and it impresses the hell out of visitors/girlfriends/etc. so long as it's close to what they're used to seeing at the sushi bar.

i actually made sushi last week and it turned out awesome for the first time ever doing it. Yea rolling is definitely the easiest part. the rice didnt taste horrible, but it was also nothing special. My big problem was the seaweed (nori). The stuff i bought was real tough and chewy.

I have made sushi 5 times now. It's been better each time. The key is the rice.
Steps you must follow when making the rice:
-rinse rice thoroughly
-use the right amount of water (depends on how much rice you are making)
-use a rice cooker and never lift the lid
-let sit in rice cooker for 10 minutes after cooking
-once rice is finished, pour into a plastic bowl and add the rice vinegar +sugar +salt mixture (use the right amount, I find slightly less is better) and fan it for a few minutes. Mix with wooden spoon
Make it (the rice) good, then the sushi will be good.

this video is pretty helpful and goes over everything i posted above pretty much.

How sharp are your knives?
That's probably not sharp enough.

Never ever should you use a serrated knife to cut sushi, you will destroy it. You should only use a super sharp chefs knife or something that is very sharp and non serrated.

Any type of knife can cost over 3 grand if you want to spend over 3 grand on it.
