Opinions on 2001 Focus SE

Roommate wants an inexpensive, reliable car. He's looking at this:

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/2332510676.html

He was asking me what I thought and I honestly know next to nothing about these cars. I know it isn't fast/cool/sporty/whatever, all that really matters is that it isn't junk and is a solid everyday car.

Thoughts? Mine are "Get a Honda" but that's a bit narrow minded.

When it comes to small, cheap, and reliable. You really can't go wrong with honda.

Every small Ford that's ever come through my family has been a suckfest.

Tell him to get a honda lol

Not terrible cars, not fantastic cars.

He's going to have to spend a nice chunk of money right off the bat to have the timing belt done if it hasn't yet been replaced. He should probably factor that in. Those motors are hard benders, and don't have timing marks, so if it breaks, have fun.

Ti_G owns a Planet Eclipse Etek
1998-2002 corolla. Try to get one of those that was built in ontario, they have tighter engine tolerances and are much less prone to sludging.

I've seen lots of zx3's go for 200,000+ miles. No matter what you do though they almost always cup the rear tires.

It's not the cars fault you aren't fixing the correct thing...

Very normal for these. There are a lot of cars out there that will go way beyond what the manufacturer suggests for timing belt life, but these cars are absolutely not the car to exceed it on. They break right when Ford tells you they will.

get the focus their 4 cylinder engines are way better then GMs imop.

also for the people with the "hondas run forever attitude" that may be true but i think hondas run like crap, so why have a meh car when you can have something a bit nicer . (imop the ride of a focus is a bit nicer , going 65 then vs a civic or corolla )

I drive a 2002 SE. It depends what motor (says the listing is flagged.) I have their Split Port Injection engine, which is the smallest they made. They are good engines, but I hear that around 100k-150k they like to drop a valve seat.

The zetec on the other hand, i haven't heard anything bad. My uncle has been working on fords his whole life and loves focuses. If something ****s up, its usually something small like an egr pipe, heat shield coming loose, belt, or motor mount.
