I was staged next to the women and her sons and the rest of their team. I saw one gentleman from a team next to both of us smoking and the women politly asked him if he could smoke that somewhere else and she explained to him that her and her two sons both had asthma. Why should she and her two sons have to stop what they were doing and walk away when that one person out of 20 people in the area could walk away and smoke somewhere else.
Im just saying places like ballparks, football fields, hospitals and some buildings have designated smoking areas for a reason.

nice to know that double standards still exist.

it is not a double standard. You are (as are the other smokers) asserting that your right to smoke is more important than anyone's health.
The DSM has a name for that.

I believe your mixing up compressed air with compressed oxygen. The air in our tanks is non flammable, while oxygen is obviously highly flammable. Tanks only become bombs if a flammable substance is introduced, such as oil. The compression exacerbates the explosion, however it is not the cause of it.
I am with you on the smoking though. It's a rule, and must be followed.

The only reason people didn't stop smokeing was because they didn't know. I didn't know you couldn't until this thread. I think we needs announcements then if it offends this many people. Not many people check there emails often

The D.O.T. website is a bit confusing, but it does seem to suggest that ANY filling is an issue, not just flammable gas (of which oxygen is just one of many). I don't imagine it is a great idea to be smoking around tanks in general but do not know the law.
This was just my first encounter in YEARS with that much smoke around me since laws around the WORLD have changed due to knowing the health hazards.
A rule exists, and it would be nice if it was followed without all the name calling, and devolution.

I am not sure why people are getting so worked up. To my fellow smokers, lets just treat the field like we do everywhere else we go and step away from the general public. If we dont mind doing it at work, at school, at resturaunts, bars, parks, stadiums, etc etc why are we *****ing about it here.
Gillette stadium and fenway park are considered "Outdoors" but if you get caught smoking in your seat you get kicked out.
Lori wrote it in the email so thus said it is a rule, and will mostlikely be a rule for upcoming events as it has been for past events. Howabout we just FOLLOW the rule.
Just because you dont get caught speeding, its still illegal!

"we kindly ask that if you need to smoke - you do so in the parking lot as these are close quarters."
See the above from the original email. If we are splitting hairs, there is nothing above that indicates a rule. It is a request. However, I as well as others will comply with it at the next event.

Oxygen also not flammable....however having high amounts of Oxygen creates a a particularly dangerous environment. One that is a real fire hazard. Youtube it you’ll see what I’m talking about. You can’t burn Oxygen....but without it you cannot have combustion. Oil spontaneously combusts at a certain pressure (example diesel engines)

Interesting thread.
I wonder what a shrink would say after reading this. If anyone knows one, please forward to him/her. I'll bet we could get some 'scripts written from this.
For the record, Lori (yeah, you're reading this...), I didn't smoke at the field at all.

Actually he is right, Oxygen is an oxidizer:
Compressed gases can be classified as
* oxidizers
* inert gases
* flammable gases
Oxidizers
Oxidizers are not flammable by them self, but will contribute to combustion as an oxidant. Fat or oil is not acceptable in combination with oxidizers.
Some common oxidizers:
* Air
* Chlorine
* Fluorine
* Nitric Oxide
* Nitrogen Dioxide
* Oxygen
Inert gases
Inert gases do not take part in combustion processes and they do not react with other materials. An inert gas supplied to a room or limited space will reduce the amount of oxygen and limit a combustion process of a fire. Inert gases are used in extinguishing systems where it is important to avoid water damage - rooms with electronic devices etc.
Some inert gases:
* Argon
* Carbon Dioxide
* Helium
* Neon
* Nitrogen
* Xenon
Flammable gases
Flammable gases together with air or oxygen in the right concentration burns or explodes if ignited.
If the mixture is to lean or to rich the mixture will not ignite.
Some flammable gases:
* Acetylene
* Ammonia
* Arsine
* Butane
* Carbon Monoxide
* Cyclopropane
* Ethane
* Ethylene
* Ethyl Chloride
* Hydrogen
* Isobutan
* Methane
* Methyl Chloride
* Propane
* Propylene
* Silane

Oxygen is needed for fire...but it not what combusts. Its probably splitting hairs but its really isnt flammable. An Oxyacetylene torch is a perfect example. You have 2 tanks Oxygen and Acetylene. Get the thing started and turn off the acetylene....your fire goes out, even with a constant supply of oxygen.
I suggest you look up what Im talking about.

Man, those cigarettes must have been laced with like LSD or something.
Because apparently breathing it in second hand causes you to lose.
