It's only important to the folks looking for the best possible performance from their paintguns.

I suppose I should point out that no matter what their level of play, it is likely completely up to the player.

Bore matching or underboring will allow your markers to be slightly more efficient and acurate.

...a thread on PBN where everyone is in agreement, how strange.

To agree with what has already been said, yes bore matching is important. At an event you've probably paid extra money for better paint, and not using a barrel/marker setup that would allow that paint to perform at it's best would be kind of silly. It might not be something you need to do with every case of paint for every day of play, but it has it's place and purpose in competitive paintball.

Not to mention your marker will shoot significantly more consistent over a chrono.

You aren't going to "chop" paint from underboring. Choping a ball refers to the bolt cutting the ball as it enters the chamber. The term you are looking for is a barrel break. Depending on the quality of paint you use you won't have to worry about this with underboring. Just underbore slightly and you shouldn't have any problems with any paint.

DISAGREE

trying to shoot fragile paint in a underbore is a fail.

I have used .693 bore forever for speedball to eliminate chances of barrel breaks. no issues with consistency over chrono or accuracy if not slight to none. shot every paint possible.

Well, that's unfortunate for you, PurEvl. I shoot fragile paint from a Python/TechT combo kit, and it works phenomenally. I can't remember the last time I had a barrel break or chop.

I'd also like to mention the fact that I've seen barrel breaks and chops happen with an overbore barrel in the past. It all depends on how well your gun is set up, it seems. The science (and there's plenty of it) is not in your favor, friend.

The Python/TechT kits are a fantastic option for anyone using any kind of closed-bolt gun. These kits also improve the performance of open bolt guns by up to 50 fps. The chamfered bore in the insert helps a lot with not breaking a ball when it's shoved from the breech into the barrel.

Yep, if you have good quality paint and a reasonable underbore you get the best of all worlds. I shot underbored with ultra evil at PSP Phoenix and with a LOT of paint through it had zero breaks.

I've underbored every weekend for the last year and a half.

well i guess i responded too fast. if u want to get one barrel only i would go overbore. but if u plan to get a kit then yes a barrel kit and matching it would be the best way to go. sorry for any confusion.

but regarding which barrel to get if it were to come down to one...overbore>underbore.

Well, that's one opinion, anyway.

I say that because I could easily have been using a .670 insert in my Python kit for the last year and gotten away with it with local paint.

The tests some people did showed that if you underbore 0.008" or more you're starting to risk more barrel breaks.

So if you use the smallest freak insert in the normal kit, 0.679, you're good for paint as big as 0.687, which is LARGE for paint nowadays, you'll probably never see anything that big anymore.

I haven't used anything above 0.679 in a long time outside of some old really crappy paint. I don't break paint and I get the great efficiency that underboring gives.

I tend to pick my inserts like this:

1. Load a ball in the bore.
2. Look at a light source.
3. If you see a large amount of light around the ball, the bore is too big.

In some situations, "squeezing" all the light from around a ball may cause your bore to be too small, but I haven't seen that personally yet.

I get my paint sized to its actual size, and then go one bore down and it works great for me.
