It simply detects jams, no reversing motion. It gives you feedback with a yellow LED. The pulsing does help prevent jams simply because it only powers the spinning motion for a half second and won't slam paint around to the point where it gets wedged, just until it's detected.
Ideally, with the selectable speeds, automatic torque, pulsing and RF capabilities, chances of jamming are minimal. I'll post up a review when I have a few cases through when it comes to how well it's worked out, but I believe the main draw for this board should be ease on the paint and consistency more than speed or anti-jamming like the SEED offers.
