The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003)

Info:
Former Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara is the sole focus of documentarian Errol Morris's The Fog of War, a film that not only analyzes McNamara's controversial decisions during the first half of the Vietnam War, but also his childhood upbringing, his education at Berkley and Harvard, his involvement in World War II, and his later years as president of the World Bank. Culling footage from almost 20 hours of interviews with the Secretary, Morris details key moments from McNamara's career, including the 1945 bombing of Tokyo, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and President Kennedy's suggestions to the Secretary that the U.S. remove itself from Vietnam. Throughout the film, the 85-year-old McNamara expounds his philosophies on international conflict, and shows regret and pride in equal measure for, respectively, his mistakes and accomplishments.

Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam (1987)

Based on the book of the same name, the program is devoted to poignant recitations of letters to and from American participants of the Vietnam war. The letters are heard over images culled from news footage, home movies and still photography, with contemporary music added to put things in the proper historical context. The 2-hour film, featuring readings from various well-known actors (see cast list), was a co-production involving Bill Couturie, a previous Emmy winner for Vietnam Requiem, and the Vietnam Veterans Ensemble Theatre Company.

In the Year of the Pig (1968)

Info:
Documentary filmmaker Emil DeAntonio's In the Year of the Pig was financed by New York society matron Mrs. Orville Schell; her fund-raising dinners earned her an executive producer credit on the completed film. An extremely radicalized view of the still-raging war in Vietnam, Pig was so unabashedly provocative that it earned DeAntonio the tireless scrutiny of FBI head J. Edgar Hoover (whose file on the filmmaker inspired yet another DeAntonio production of 1990, Mr. Hoover and I). Bracketed between his Rush to Judgment (based on the highly suspect findings of JFK-conspiracy theorist Jim Garrison ) and his America is Hard to See (a chronicle of the Eugene McCarthy Presidential campaign), DeAntonio's In the Year of the Pig is an amalgam of the best and worst elements of those two offerings. The film says what needs to be said, but it often ends up preaching only to the converted.

Hearts and Minds (1974)

Info:
The title of this documentary was inspired by the mantra recited by those in charge of the Vietnam War: "In order to win the war, we must win the hearts and minds of the people." The failure to achieve this, coupled with the disastrous no-win policies of the higher-ups, is the nucleus of this film, put together by director Peter Davis in the same manner as Marcel Ophuls' The Sorrow and the Pity. Like the Ophuls film, Davis juxtaposes news footage of the Vietnam war with interviews conducted with its observers and participants, interspersing vignettes of the fatuous comments made by the generals and politicians. The film was briefly withdrawn from distribution when Walter Rostow, one-time advisor to President Johnson, insisted that his reputation had been damaged and demanded that the two minutes featuring Rostow on-camera be deleted. More controversy arose when Hearts and Minds won the Best Documentary Oscar, whereupon the Academy issued a statement--read during the awards ceremony by Frank Sinatra--that it did not condone or advocate the volatile statements made by the producers during their acceptance speech.

List of episodes:
Episode 01: Roots of A War
Despite cordial relations between American intelligence offficers and Communist leader Ho Chi Minh in the turbulent closing months of World War II, French and British hostility to the Vietnamese revolution laid the groundwork for a new war.

Episode 02: America's Mandarin (1954-1963)
To stop the spread of Communism in Southeast Asia, America replaced France in South Vietnam--supporting autocratic President Ngo Dinh Diem until his own generals turned against him in a coup that brought political chaos to Saigon.

Episode 03: LBJ Goes to War (1964-1965)
With Ho Chi Minh determined to reunite Vietnam, Lyndon Baines Johnson determined to prevent it; with South Vietnam on the verge of collapse, the stage was set for massive escalation of the undeclared Vietnam War.

Episode 04: America Takes Charge (1965- 1967)
In two years, the Johnson administration's troop build-up dispatched 1.5 million Americans to Vietnam to fight a war they found baffling, tedious, exciting, deadly and unforgettable.

Episode 05: America's Enemy (1954-1967)
The Vietnam War as seen from different perspectives; by Vietcong guerillas and sympathizers; by North Vietnamese leaders; by rank and file, and by Americans held prisoner in Hanoi.

Episode 06: Tet, 1968
The massive enemy offensive at the Lunar New Year decimated the Vietcong and failed to topple the Saigon government, but led to the beginning of America's military withdrawal.

Episode 07: Vietnamizing the War (1968- 1973)
President Nixon's program of troop pull-outs, stepped-up bombing and huge arms shipments to Saigon changed the war, and left GI's wondering which of them would be the last to die in Vietnam.

Episode 08: Cambodia and Laos
Despite technical neutrality, both of Vietnam's smaller neighbors were drawn into the war, suffered massive bombing, and, in the case of Cambodia, endured a post-war holocaust of nightmare proportions.

Episode 09: Peace is at Hand (1968-1973)
While Americans and Vietnamese continued to clash in battle, diplomats in Paris argued about making peace, reaching an accord that, after more than four years, proved to be a preface to further bloodshed.

Episode 10: Homefront USA
Through troubled years of controversy and violence, US casualties mounted, victory remained elusive and American opinion moved from general approval to general dissatisfaction with the Vietnam War.

Episode 11: The End of the Tunnel (1973- 1975)
South Vietnamese leaders believed that America would never let them go down to defeat--a belief that died as North Vietnamese tanks smashed into Saigon on April 30, 1975, and the long war ended with South Vietnam's surrender.

History Channel - The Vietnam War (2007)

Info:
America’s first televised war comes starkly and comprehensively alive in this sweeping
documentary collection. The best material from the archives of THE HISTORY CHANNEL and
CBS News. 7 complete documentaries offers rare insight into critical elements of the
Vietnam War. Contemporary footage and commentary capture the Vietnam experience as it happened.

At a total cost of more than 3.1 million lives, the Vietnam conflict is, to date, America’s
longest and most controversial war. It also marked the first time TV journalists ventured to
the frontlines to bring the spectacle of combat into American living rooms. Across the nation,
Americans watched, captivated by the surprise Tet Offensive and the slow-motion tragedy of
the 77-day Battle of Khe Sanh, and inspired by the courage and skill of American soldiers at
decisive engagements like Ia Drang Valley, Con Thien, and Dak To.

This special THE HISTORY CHANNEL collection profiles the decision-makers of the Vietnam War
and chronicles each key event, from the advisors’ arrival in 1959 to the airlift from the roof
of the American Embassy in 1975. Archival footage and interviews with historians and veterans
reveal the military and political strategies in play, and CBS News archives take viewers to
the frontlines to witness the daily struggles of American servicemen and women.

Combining interviews with Vietnam veterans and the actual footage from CBS News coverage,
the viewer is given a glimpse into the war that has rarely been seen. Battle stories are
heart breaking enough in the words of the veterans, but coupled with the news footage and
reporting (for the first time from the front lines,) it becomes a greater more personal grief.

Combat Vietnam: To Hell and Beyond (2000)

Info:
This documentary is exceedingly good value for money. Although the picture and sound quality are varied (I'm sure some episodes were taken from magnetic masters), the content was surprisingly refreshing in a Vietnam documentary sense. That is, this documentary seemed to have been coupled together from Military newsreel archives from the actual Vietnam conflict (pre 69, I think), and was deviod of the usual retrospective look at the war. Listening to the voice-overs, the war was already won - by the US. Some fill-in sections (to keep each episode to the 30 minute mark) was in some cases filled with un-narrated segments, but rather than adding sound effects, they had someone on a synthesizer making a pretty corn-ball "score" (for lack of a more accurate term describing the embarassing sounds that accompanied the images in this case). Fortunately, these segments were pretty far between. From a military equipment perspective, I actually learnt a few things from it. For starters, they showed the Marines amphibous APC, one which had a brief shot in Coppola's "Apocalypse Now", which I had previously thought was not hardware used in Vietnam. Definitely a worthy purchase for Vietnam era miliraty buffs.

History Channel - Viet Cong (2007)

Info:
Jungle warfare was perfected by the North Vietnamese. From their hidden tunnel cities, the Viet Cong launched operations that were terrifying in their ingenuity, savagery, and persistence. The 10-day battle for the place that came to be known as Hamburger Hill was perhaps the classic conflict of the Vietnam War. Piecing together newly disclosed stories from both sides, we learn how American commanders made the mistake of fighting this battle as they had fought WWII. The North Vietnamese, employing a very different set of strategies, built a massive warren of tunnels and then faded into Laos when the battle turned against them.

Vietnam The Chopper War (2005)

Info:
As US-backed South Vietnamese troops began to wane in their struggle against the Communist North, the American military sought a solution that would turn the advantage back in their favour. The answer was to improve air mobility with the introduction of the US Army helicopter, in vast numbers and multiple guises. Amongst others, the now legendary Bell UH-1 or "Huey" helicopter became a familiar sight in the Vietnamese skies, carrying out various roles from escort gunship to air ambulances or "Medivac" helicopters. The versatility of these aircraft was recognised as being a major asset, one which has been adapted through the decades to the needs of modern warfare.

Virtual JFK: Vietnam If Kennedy Had Lived (2008)

Info:
The date of November 22, 1963, will forever be engraved in the hearts and minds of all Americans, but the events of that horrible day speak to a broader underlying question in light of the controversy to follow: had he lived and been reelected in 1964, how would John F. Kennedy have handled foreign policy in Vietnam? Americans will never have a definitive answer, of course, but in the documentary Virtual JFK: Vietnam If Kennedy Had Lived, director Koji Masutani re-introduces this question and explores potential outcomes in light of counterfactuals, what-ifs, and proposed scenarios. Masutani draws heavily from the events that did transpire in Kennedy's presidency to hone in on a pattern of decision-making evident throughout his career, via his responses to such events as East Berlin and the Cuban Missile Crisis, and uses this to make predictions about Kennedy's response to Vietnam. On many levels, Masutani directed this film as a very deliberate choice at the time of the American Iraqi War (on the eve of the 2008 presidential election) to demonstrate that a nation's commander in chief will dramatically influence the direction and general well-being of a country's future

Winter Soldier (1972)

Info:
In the late 1960's, the war in Vietnam was widely criticized by activists and college students across the United States, but at the dawn of the 1970's new voices joined the outcry against the war. Vietnam Veterans Against the War (or VVAW) was a group formed by men who had served in Vietnam and had come to believe that the war -- and America's presence in it -- was wrong. In early 1971, as reports of the 1968 My Lai Massacre and the court martial of Lt. William Calley were still in the news, the VVAW organized what they called "the Winter Soldier Investigation," in which Vietnam vets and VVAW members were encouraged to come forward and take part in public hearings in which they discussed war crimes they had witnessed first hand. Held in Detroit, the hearings were an emotional outpouring in which veterans discussed horrific violence against civilians, women and children, talked about how military commanders sought to dehumanize the Viet Cong in the eyes of the soldiers, and expressed their desire to prevent other young men from suffering as they did. A handful of filmmakers were on hand to document the event, and Winter Soldier is a disturbing but often moving account of men coming to terms with the horrors of war. While the makers of Winter Soldier were uncredited on screen, they included Fred Aranow, Nancy Baker, Robert Fiore, David Gillis, Barbara Koppel, Michael Lesser and Michael Weil. The title of the film and the investigation came from the work of Thomas Paine, who in 1776 wrote, "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

Sir! No Sir! (2005)

Info:
The little-known protest of the Vietnam War staged from within the ranks of the military is explored in director David Zeiger's revealing documentary. Despite the well-documented media coverage of Vietnam War protests that took place on college campuses across the nation, few people but the most ardent history buffs remain aware of the massive protests that flourished in U.S. barracks and military bases at home and abroad. Staged by countless military men disillusioned with the ongoing war, these protests reached from the hallowed halls of West Point to the bullet-riddled rice fields of Vietnam. Though hundreds of soldiers were imprisoned for voicing their controversial views and thousands more sent into exile for their subversive activities, the tireless efforts of the government and media to suppress this remarkable tale would eventually falter as the dissenting voices became too numerous to silence. Thirty years after the last bombs were dropped on Vietnam, the remarkable tale of the soldiers unafraid to stand up for their beliefs comes to the screen in a film that will forever alter the manner in which contemporary audiences view one of the most controversial wars in modern history.

Episode 6: Battlefield Vietnam; The Tet Offensive

In April 1967 North Vietnamese Army units opened their biggest offensive of the Vietnam War.Their roll was to draw American forces into the remotest parts of South Vietnam far away from the populated areas. The hope was that the main attacks scheduled for early 1968 would find the Americans deployed in all the wrong places.Fighting began at the end of March when a strategic Marine patrol ran into an ambush near one of the strategic hills that lay between the fire bases of Khe Sanh and Con Thein.Dozens of Marines were killed in this first brief and unseen combat. The North Vietnamese had by then assembled nearly 2000 men near the base at Con Thein and almost everyday they hit the Marines with artillery, rockets, and mortars.

Episode 7: Battlefield Vietnam; War On The DMZ

In early 1968 the US Marines fought the NVA in one of the most bitterly contested battles of the Vietnam War.For 77 days 20,000 NVA troops laid siege to the Marine Combat Base at Khe Sanh.At stake was the control over the gateway to South Vietnam. The siege of Kha Sanh was the longest single battle of the Vietnam War.It was also one of the most violent. There were savage artillery duels, mass infantry assaults, and fierce hand-to-hand combat.Khe Sanh also saw the most concentrated tactical bombing campaign in history as Americans used massed air power to try and break the siege. The NVA meant their attack on Khe Sanh to deliver a historic victory that would destroy the will of the US to carry on the war.In fact,in spite of immense sacrifice the NVA would fail.

Episode 8: Battlefield Vietnam; Seige At Khe Sanh

The defense of the American combat base at Khe Sanh was given the code name "Operation Scotland".Khe Sanh was one of the most remote outposts in Vietnam but by Jan 1968 even the American President Lyndon Johnson had taken a personal interest. With the Marines facing a full scale siege by the North Vietnamese army the question was being asked "should the base be held or should it be quietly evacuated an abandoned?".Many in Washington worried the defending Khe Sanh could invite a costly and humiliating defeat.General Westmoreland,The US Commander in Vietnam, dismissed all such fears.Already Khe Sanh was tieing up nearly 20,000 NVA troops and their might be a chance at winning a US victory.

Episode 10: Battlefield Vietnam; Rolling Thunder

The US campaign against North Vietnams transport system began on April 3,1965.In a month long offensive Navy and Air Force planes hit bridges, road and rail junctions, truck parks, and supply depots. For the Americans one of the most important targets was the Ham Rung bridge across the Sung Ma River. The Bridge was a choke point for troops and supplies moving southwards. In spite of the repeated attempts the Americans failed to distroy the target, two US planes were lost to Mig fights and more to anti-aircraft defenses.Although the bombing was meant to the damage North Vietnamese military transport system it also had political aims - it was supposed to pressure the North to stop supporting guerrillas fighting in the South.

The Ten Thousand Day War (1980)

Info:
The military, political, and social repercussions of the Vietnam War continue to be felt, in the ways in which it altered the landscape of American life forever. Written by CNN correspondent Peter Arnett, the 13 episodes of Vietnam: The Ten Thousand Day War trace the entire course of the conflict, from the closing days of World War II when Ho Chi Minh first began to assemble his revolutionary army, to the fall of Saigon in 1975. Documentary filmmaking simply doesn't get much better than this. With extensive archival footage shot by both sides and interviews with participants ranging from infantry soldiers to diplomats, Vietnam has a detached, journalistic objectivity and fairness throughout. It would be much easier to understand the war if it were possible to lay the blame at the feet of the French, or Kennedy, Johnson, or Nixon, but the war's progress was never that clear-cut. Rather, it was a slippery slope that inexorably led to thousands of deaths and laid waste to the country of Vietnam. Unlike WWII, there were no heroes' welcomes for Vietnam's returning GI's; more often than not, they were met with silence or outright contempt. The series' final chapter explores their struggles in readjusting to normal life in society. The somber tone of Richard Basehart's narration is a perfect match for the gravity of the subject matter. This two-DVD boxed set is essential watching for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Vietnam War and all its ramifications, and should be required viewing for history classes

The Century of Warfare: Vietnam - 1955-1989 (1993)

Info:
Indo-China has witnessed conflict from the end of World War II until the present day. It was dominated by North Vietnam’s twenty year struggle to impose its will on the non-communist South.
This episode charts the American involvement in the Vietnam War, one that eventually ended in disillusionment and disaster, as well as Vietnam’s subsequent overthrow of Pol Pot’s brutal Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia.
