Want $1,000,000? Fix Toyota's Problem.

http://blogs.edmunds.com/strategies/...lerations.html

Quote:
Edmunds.com is offering a $1 million prize to researchers who can explain how a vehicle could suddenly accelerate out of control. The announcement comes days after testimony in Congress by Toyota failed to completely lay to rest concerns about this safety hazard which has led to the recall of millions of vehicles worldwide.

Edmunds.com is currently drafting rules for the prize. It is designed to attract the best thinkers in the world to explain what is really causing the recent rash of incidents. Participants will have to demonstrate, in a controlled environment, a repeatable factor that will cause an unmodified new vehicle to accelerate suddenly and unexpectedly.

Every automaker has received complaints of unintended acceleration. This problem has been plaguing consumers for more than 20 years, since Audi first captured headlines about its sudden acceleration incidents. Personal descriptions of unintended acceleration are listed throughout Edmunds' CarSpace forums. The discussion, "Toyota Sienna Uncontrolled Acceleration" started by a site visitor back in November 2006.

In announcing the price, Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl commented, "Many incidents are not fully addressed by recalls. NHTSA (National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration) is responding to the challenge with more of what they have already done: additional investigations. Isn't it time to try a different approach?"

"Consumers need to feel confident that the vehicles that they are drive are as safe as possible," Anwyl stated. "We look forward to seeing the safety contributions that this effort generates."
Edmunds is offering $1 million if you can find the cause of Toyota's acceleration problem. Anyone got a test car to donate?

They know what the issue is but as they did before it will cut into their budget. Their dbw controller/pedal are fubar and without redesigning the two they wont get get anywhere. Easiest solution? Rip that POS DBW sheet out.

Probably a faulty capasitor. I had a few toyota ecus that had bad caps and the car would either not start, or rev on its own.

This is the first major problem with drive by wire. Toyota's the only manufacturer that's had issues. My car has DBW and I'm sold on it now.

1) it allows for greater design capabilities when you don't have to design in a mechanic link to everything

2) Wires weigh less than metal

3) You can have variable steering ratios with DBW steering

4) You know a mechanical throttle can still break, right?

If you drove a car with DBW or electronic steering, I guarantee you would never know unless someone told you it was. It feels just like driving any other car.
