So I shot this pig.
Around dusk myself, my girlfriend and I were driving around the lease checking areas where we had found tracks and whatnot during our hikes during the day. At some point we turned a corner and 300 yards or so down the road there were 4 or 5 hogs and a bunch of piglets rooting around in the road. We stopped the car and I got out with my 20” AR-15 with a 1-4x scope and told my friends and girlfriend to stay in the car and leave it running. I looked through my scope from the car but could not make out where one animal started/ended in the low light so I started down the road hugging the right shoulder. I stopped a few times along the way to see if I could get a shot off but had to keep moving closer. There was a large brown boar in the center of the group but I couldn't get a good shot on it. When I was roughly 120 yards away a large sow walked over to the right side of the road by herself.
She was facing to the right, so I could take a shot to the right side of her body. I took a knee, tightened my sling and relaxed my breathing. I was unsure of the distance so I placed my reticle so that the 100 and 200 yard marks straddled her chest and took my shot.
She sort of buckled then rolled over and started kicking. The rest of the pigs started screaming and took off toward the left hand side of the rod. There were probably 30 animals or so in the group, as many more came out of the woods on the right side of the road and crossed to the left. I got up and started running toward the wounded animal.
As I got there she was still kicking where she dropped, so I shot her behind the ear with my CZ-75. She stopped kicking and that was the end of it.
My girlfriend pulled up in the car right as I got there and shot the pig in the head. She sort of freaked out for a minute but then was ok with the situation and started taking pictures.
I called up the guy in charge of the lease and he brought his truck over. We tossed it in the back and took it to quarter it. It weighed just over 160 lbs.
I shot it with a 62 gr. Federal Fusion JSP. The round entered in the upper right leg muscle just behind the bone, entered the chest, passed through both lungs, stuck the left leg just above the elbow shattering the bone, and exited the animal. She dropped where she was shot and did not go anywhere.
There was very little damage to the right leg, the entry wound wasn't really visible until the skin was removed. The round expanded in the chest somewhere and the lungs tuned into goo. The left side of the chest has a large exit and the left leg/shoulder shattered completely, but there was little damage visible until the skin was removed, just a nickle-sized exit.
The bone in the left leg bone fragmented badly. We were unable to find any evidence of the bullet anywhere in the animal, so as far as I can tell it held together and is on the road somewhere. Fusion is good stuff.
An interesting experience from start to finish. Not particularly proud of shooting a pig, but it is what it is. Got some food out of it, which is at the processor today.
The End.
