Like cleaning a gun? Keeping dirt, water, etc. off of it so it doesn't lead to rusting. After a day of shooting I usually break it down and run a patch of solvent through to barrel and let that soak. Then I run dry/clean patches through the barrel until they are spotless or almost spotless. Keep the action/bolt oiled.
I don't clean my Saiga very often since it's basically an AK and will run forever. Shotguns also don't have to be cleaned as often. Well pumps don't. I've never owned an auto so they might be more finicky and need to be cleaned more often.
I would buy a Tipton carbon fiber cleaning rod, some patches designed for the bore you'll be cleaning, one of the jags(I think thats what it is called) and then some oil, solvent, and I think that's all you'll need.
