How America wants to use renewable energy vs. the rest of the world

America wants to use solar power to provide electricity to thousands of homes. India (and maybe Africa) just wants to be able to communicate:

The most important thing about renewable energy is how much money they can save whoever is using them. **** the environment, if its cheaper for India to put solar panels on their towers than run power cables to them, who gives a ****. It has nothing to do with the environment impact, it has to do with the cost.

Interesting idea, trying to expand cell coverage to people not on electricity grids.

But how do those people charge the phones that would be used on this cell network??

get rid of energy hogging appliances and electronics and inefficient hvac: suddenly renewable is affordable again!

oh they do. they have cell recharging kiosks, they have people with generators and/or solar that charge/offer others electricity for a few hours each day to charge electronics.

It's a matter of "appropriate technology." You can apply these "cutting edge" technologies to much simpler tasks and suddenly they are even better. America will eventually derive a lot of its power from renewable energy, but we always want the biggest and the best. I understand that even personal solar systems for a home are still rather expensive, but what people need to realize is how to apply technology. Rather than have massive solar thermal power plants and wind farms, you break it down to a community level and suddenly it becomes much more manageable. Rather than trying to power your whole house with renewable energy, use things like solar water heaters or use solar/wind to power your water heater - things like that.

It will be a long time before the technology is perfected and the infrastructure is in place (if ever) to derive 100% of the country's electrical needs from renewable sources. If we would instead focus on incremental improvements and implementation, I think it would be a lot better. Though, that could create a lot of waste at the same time.

Using power to our advantage isn't very green imo. What if the grass needs sun more than our solar panels? Plus all that technology doesn't decompose well.

Nobody is green except the bushmen of africa. Even they are poisoning their own wells with their ****.

what? using a solar panel doesn't steal that energy from the grass unless it means it puts the grass in the shade, which is stupid. A popular place for solar panels is your roof. you grow grass on your roof?

some library out in the desert uses a special type of a/c to cool the building. at night when the temp drops, theres a massive tank of water that is chilled into a massive block of ice. during the day its fairly easy to keep the ice frozen, and that is what cools the air going into the building. it was on modern marvels or something, supposedly cut their cooling costs by like 70%, and was very simple technology.

go go green air conditioning?

It was on a "going green" special on either Discovery or History channel. Rather than continually using energy during all day to cool the air, during the night (when it's far cooler) they freeze massive blocks of ice. During the day, they simply use the ice like a radiator to cool the air.

This serves a double purpose. It cuts energy costs by using less energy to cool the water at night rather than cool the air during the day. Secondly it reduces the peak load on the power grid. Those two things together are pretty much the only things we can do now. Until we can find a way to store or effectively transport the wind and solar energy produced in the midwest to the east and west coasts where it is needed most, we're going to have a very hard time going "green."

saw that on modern marvels too, some city buildings have begun installing those, not that they care about going green, they just want to get snoby carbon credits and save some cash while at it.
