Those who have a side job with computers...

Do you pay taxes on the work you do?

I fix computers on the side... mainly spyware issues and charge $50 for the job... Last year I fixed about 20 computers.

I am wondering if I should bother putting it on my taxes or not. This year so far I've fixed about 6 for cash. No businesses, just homes.

Stick it to the man and don't pay taxes.

Honestly compared to my regular income what I do with computers isn't even worth filling for.

I used to post ads on craigslist for computer repair, but I stopped after a laptop incident and without insurance to back you up, well it sucks

Did you take apart the laptop?

I won't.

What happened was someone had me reformat their old laptop from some sketchy guy. He paid me $60 to do it and when I finished and tried to contact him he had gotten a new number and I didn't know where he lived. Few months go buy and the laptop was stolen from me and he finally calls back to say if I still had it. I told him my situation and we worked out a deal.

There are actual laws that would protect YOU if he had changed his numbers and you had no way of contacting him. Could have charged him storage fees LOL. Depending on how long you're talking about too. Having it stolen doesn't really mean Craigslist is bad for advertising.

basically make a simple agreement that if they fail to pickup within 30 days it's your property and you're not responsible for theft or data loss

in most states that would have been called abandon property. to cover yourself all you needed to do after 30 days was to send the owner a registered letter. if it came back or there was no contact you could have sold the laptop to cover the repair costs and there would have been nothing the owner could have done. i used to work at micro center and we used to have people do this to us a lot. then come in pay the charge for an old pc/laptop and when they find out the cost to repair it is more then 1/2 the cost of a new unit they just leave it for us to toss or sell for parts.

if you start pushing serious money, and maybe even have a location where you receive clients, then you might attract a lot of attention. but as long as it's a home operation, even if it's an almost full time job, i wouldn't bother.

but! The Man will want to know where you get the money you are spending from...

You have to report that income according the IRS. They want 15% for social security and Medicare.

it will only attract attention if you live on your own in an area and report low income. The IRS will wonder how you make like $25,000/year but you need $40,000/year to live in that area. if you have roommates or live at home, they wont notice

You charged someone $50 to flash their BIOS or they offered you $50?

living at home, with your parents reporting you as part of the household in their taxes, is the best place (after Cayman Islands) for tax evasion.

Yeah, I never have. However, my income from yearly freelance work has never been close to $500. If it was my primary source of income or something It'd be a different story.

If you make good money doing it, you're probably more likely to be investigated by the IRS. Obviously if you store it all in your mattress and not your bank it's more difficult for them, but if you're buying boats and **** if your normal job is working at the quicki mart like Apu, they'll probably get suspicious.

Technically, you are suppose to report all income to the IRS but we all know that not everyone does that.
