NYC/Denver photography adventure

okay so i have family in new york city and friends in denver that i am going to visit over the summer. ive only been to nyc a couple times and have never been to denver. are there any places i should make sure i go in the 2 cities? i am in both places for around a week so i will have time to go pretty much everywhere. ill mainly just be in downtown denver but ill be all over nyc. thanks in advance.

Oh, and can i take my camera bag as a carry-on or do i have to put it with the rest of my luggage?

You can take your camera bag as a carry on if it meets airline specifications for one... and if you've flown at any point in the past 8 years you'll know how strict they are about that (no sarcasm).

If you're going to be all over NYC (Manhattan?) and plan to be there all summer, I'd suggest starting at 2nd & 7th and vaguely wander a few avenues E/W and 10 blocks N/S a day. You'll find some awesome stuff. Just keep going up until you hit 59th st (this is where the city'burbs start, as far as I could tell during my time there). Check out MOMA free Friday nights, and PS1 (it's like $2 for students) if you're into contemporary art.

I always bring my KATA r103 as a carryon... along with my backpacking pack, they aren't very happy about it but it works.

ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS carry a printed copy of this on you and one in every bag you have.

It basically says you can carry three bags, noone can stop you, and they have to hand check all film at your request. It also gets you through security faster if you show it to the guys at the beginning.

If you must check your photo equipment ( won't fit in carry on sized), get a flare gun, stick it in there, and declare it as a weapon. You get to use your own lock and you get to watch a guy go through your bag, then he locks it back up and you get the key.

The top of the Empire State is a must while you're in NYC. It's like 20 bucks to go to the 86th floor but definitely worth it.

Have you tried this before? Because my airlines only allow 2 carry ons.

Yes. All weapons need to be locked. You can not lock general checked baggage. Stick a piece in your checked baggage, bam permission to lock it.

Hmmmm... no fee for an extra carry on? If not, this may save me some money this trip since United charges for a second checked luggage (American didn't.)

edit: Nevermind... I get 2 free. Scratch all this. I may decide to bring my film camera though...

That's because only crazy people fly Southwest, it's the Greyhound of the skys... and nobody messes with people that ride Greyhound.

OP- You MUST take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry, you can get great shots of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty for free.
