What level of shooting are you doing? What size prints?
The D40 is an excellent camera for most.
If youre dead set on upgrading though, I might suggest a D5000, but if you have got the extra dough, the D90 is as good as you'll probably EVER need.

Mind blowing site for camera, flash, and lens reviews.
Take a look before you buy anything. You will not regret it.

Compared side by side, for the most common amateur shooting, the D40 is an amazing value. Unless youre doing prints significantly larger than 8.5x11, I challenge you to spot qualitative differences between that and any other camera under $800.

And back to the thread starter:

Quote:
The Nikon D90 is a fantastic camera. It's Nikon's newest and best DX format DSLR. I prefer it to the old D300, which costs almost twice as much. That's the way it goes with digital cameras: new is almost always better, even for much less cost. The D90 has identical, or slightly better technical image quality than the D300, the exact same rear LCD, and adds several very useful ergonomic features for faster handling compared to the D300. These handling improvements will let you react faster to conditions, meaning you're more likely to get better pictures by being better prepared.

D40 is a glorified point and shoot with a ****ty sensor, ****ty ergonomics, and no built-in AF motor.

Again, Ken Rockwell is paid to bash anything old and push the new product line for Nikon.

... so his raving over the D40 (which came out ages ago) is a marketing ploy?

Right... the fact that he maintained its cost effective superiority even compared to the D5000 until just a few months ago (when the D5000 became available for less than $600 WITH LENS) is a total ruse....

He says he uses the kit 18-55 for portraits, even over some of the less ****ty glass.

His opinion is invalid. The only places I trust are DPReview for general stuff and The-digital-picture for Canon stuff.

I will admit that he leans pretty heavily towards Nikons but he shows the same attention to value and deep technical explanation with his Canon reviews as he does with his Nikon reviews.

I also use DPreview as well. Im not saying KR is the end all of review sites but is pretty damn thorough.
As always you need to keep biases in mind.

He seems to have a bias toward ****ty stuff.

I don't know a single person who would choose to have a kit 18-55 over better glass.

Ken Rockwell is only good for the technical info that you can't lie about. I use him to compare Nikon lenses, that's about it.

Get a 17-55 for the d90, it's one of the best lenses for it you can purchase, if you don't plan on going full frame. Or a 35 1.8

If you notice, his reviews are aimed at the skill level of the people most likely to be interested in that camera.
If you read a review for a D40, D3000, or D5000 he will talk about quality vs cost as it applies to entry level photogs. When he gets into D90 and higher quality cams he begins to suggest better lenses that would realistically only be of use to higher level phtogs.

Ken Rockwell is iffy for me. I mean some of his stuff sounds good, but I'm still noob and easily duped. What rubbed me the wrong way was I was looking for reviews on the Canon 70-200 4L non-is. He said he got a bad one and STILL REVIEWED IT.

Here, let me get a broken gun, and then explain why the model sucks, not waiting for a new one to arrive and give it a proper review.

d40 is aimed towards rich soccer moms, if you are at all serious about photography you will quickly find its limitations about what glass you can use. If he can afford a d90, why even bother with a d40. I would rather have a canon G11 then a d40. I suggest you read the d40 sticky

I agree that the D40(x) is definitely an entry level camera, but you have to admit its a good value for what you get.

If the thread starter wants to get a nicer camera, then by all means he should. Thats why I suggested the D90. Its just as good, if not better in some tech specs, a good deal cheaper than the D300 (almost half as expensive on adorama for just the body).

Read the thread, then post.

its not a good value for the money. You could get a canon xs or xsi for the same price or spend a little more and get a T1i. Any of those bodies are way better than the d40,d60, or d5000. You really are talking out of your *** here, not one person on this forum is going to agree with you about the d40

Akira, sorry. I spoke incorrectly. Meant to say the D40 WAS a good value. Now of course there Are better models out that are a much better value (whether you go nikon or canon).

Personally, everyone among my family and friends shoots a nikon. I shoot a nikon. I spent a week with another friends canon and found it good enough but there is no denying that I am a nikon guy.

Sorry for any typos. Typing on an iPod keypad is a pain...
