Depends what you want out of cycling: max performance or max gain? You'll be able to ride longer and faster with less effort on the rodie, but you're gonna get more out of the ride on a fixie (including enjoyment imo.) Riding a fixie pushes me to perform and being more involved makes it more fun for me. That's a general case of course. Some of the best marathon riders ride fixed gears, and a lot of professional cyclers train on fixies.
