Me too! I've heard some pretty wild rumors about Rob, and they're honestly not true. The 'emergent' church label is sort of unjustified. It is definitely a new kind of church, but we don't play down the importance of the Bible as some people have said Mars Hill does. If anyone has any question about Mars Hill/Rob Bell I'd be happy to answer them.

I've heard everything from that Rob is a heretic/false prophet to he doesn't follow the Bible at all, and just teaches whatever he wants (type Rob Bell in to YouTube and you'll see what I mean). And because Mars Hill isn't your conventional church (I mean it's in an old strip mall for Pete's sake!), has a thriving base of college-age people, and Rob doesn't fit the description of your typical pastor, I think Mars gets unfairly labeled as emergent. I'm not saying that it isn't emergent completely, I just think people label it as such before they actually really investigate.

I don't like a lot of churches around - especially megachurches which are typically run more like profit oriented corporations than they are like actual churches. They're constantly asking for money (via some very clever psychological ploys and marketing techniques that you'd be shocked to know), entertainment based, emotion based, rarely having communion and having very little tangible impact on the community around them, and largely ignoring any part of the bible that doesn't sound very nice. The real giveaway is that they've largely stopped supporting overseas missions and anything without a direct return in terms of membership (=money). That's exactly what you'd expect if it was just a business. Generally speaking as far as I'm concerned if a church is big it sets off warning bells. Our culture simply isn't compatible enough with Christianity for churches to get that big without twisting the message somehow. We're becoming like the RC church - so much extra fluff that the gospel is obscured.

Even so I've really enjoyed some of Rob Bell's and Rick Warren's etc. stuff. Every church has it's problems.

Mornin' Krew.

My parents go to a "megachurch" and I'd say that even though there is some semblance of what has been mentioned, they have grown in their faith since attending. My wife and I attend a very small church in a small town and the problem there is, like any small town, it's cliquish. And even though my wife and I had been very active in our old church and outside ministries for quite a few years before we moved, since we are new to this church we must be "new Christians". Which can be annoying, but God is teaching us patience and maybe that is what we need. But then that is what the Holy Spirit is like, He's less concerned with our comfort and is more concerned with our growth. Mega, small it don't matter people are still "employed" in the activity of it and people act like people, what is important is what is God doing in the hearts of it's attendees. Personally I don't think He's daunted by the size, or lack of, of any church and chooses to go where He wills.

Mars Hill doesn't pass around an offering, rather they have these things in the back called 'joy boxes' that are in lieu of those. They don't constantly remind us of them, they figure that if you want to give, you will. We take communion regularly, in fact, we even took it yesterday. It's so strange though, I feel more at home at Mars with 5,000 people a service than I ever did back in Evart, which are all small churches! I never thought I would attend a megachurch, because I feel like most of them are missing the point, but I love where I'm at now.

I, myself, enjoy going to smaller churches because I like the everybody knows everybody type of thing. My parents don't go to the same church as me and their church is huge. (3,000 people per service, 2 services) and I hate it. It, to me, seems to be like a business and the worship makes me feel like I'm at a concert or something. I guess to some people that's cool, but I particularly don't like it. I would have to agree that big churches can be a bit dangerous, but regardless, John Piper (my fav), Matt Chandler, and Mark Driscoll all have some awesome sermons. I would definitely recommend them.

On a side note, I may be attending an "Act Like Men" conference next month. I will probably be one of the youngest people there, but me and my young life leader are going. Should be pretty cool.

markcheb you're right, people can grow in any church. Like I say every church has it's problems, some are worse than others.

Mars Hill seems decent from what I've heard especially as megachurches go. I'll have to look into the reasons for all the controversy.

[edit]I'm never sure how much to trust wikipedia, but here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Hill_Church is their article. I like most things about the church besides the sheer power held by the senior leadership. Personally I don't believe in the idea of pastors (not that I have a choice these days) for the very reason that pastors normally have too much power.
