For Whom the Bell Tolls is a good one to start on. Skip
A Farwell to Arms unless you really get into Hemmingway. Everybody reads
The Old Man and the Sea and while good, it doesn't really resonate with me like some of his other stuff. You may also want to check out
Death in the Afternoon, a politically incorrrect look at Spanish bullfighting among other things.
Grab anything by Kipling. The language can be a little dense, but he is the soldier's poet. Nobody ever said it as well.
