Good DSLR to start off on?

I'm asking my mom for a DSLR for x-mas since I just bought my own new pb gun.
Im not looking to ask for one that is more then $550~

Are these good choices? they are in order of which I like the most to least.

A few lessons:

1. Ask in the FAQ thread at the top of the page.
2. Don't buy from ritz.
3. Don't get a sony.
4. Look at the Rebel series from Canon.
5. Look at entry stuff from Nikon but not the d40/d40x/d60.
6. -.-

Buy a used rebel. Hell, for the price of the cameras you listed you could get a t1i.

ritz is always behind on times and they are way overpriced. b&h FTW.
why not sony? because they just arent in the same league as canon, nikon. plus no one has sony so you cant learn from your friends and borrow lenses.

I started off on my Nikon D50 and am still using it. I'd say look into one of those if you can. Bought one from another PbN user for about $350 with a Sigma 18-70mm f/2.8-4.5 and like 6 1gb cards. Only reason he tossed the cards in was because he no longer was going to be using them.

ritz = overpriced. Get something from Adorama or B&H photo. I just got a t1i body for $529 on Adorama.

Read the stickies on the d40(x) and d60.

Why not sony? Because if you learn, and want to get better the lens line-up is small and expensive. That is unless you use some old minolta lenses. The IS is inside the bodies but isn't as good as lens IS. Though I personally don't care about IS.

Are you looking for a body and a lens, or just a body for $550?

For 550 you could get a used canon 30d with a lens and memory.

I think nowadays the new Rebel T1I is stronger than the 30D...I've been suggesting that to people instead of the classic used 30D

I'm interested to hear your reasons Jimmy. I've had an XSi since June of 2k8 and was looking to put upcoming Christmas money into a 30D since I'm looking for a faster frame rate and larger iso range for as cheap as possible.

no it actually is really bad.

I agree with jimmy in regards to the t1i. The 30d's image processing is 2 generations behind the t1i, the 30d does not handles noise anywhere near as well as the t1i, and the differences in frame rates are minimal. Also the t1i has video capability and a bigger lcd screen.

^^^agreed. Also if I had the choice between a T1I and a 30/40/50D, and didn't have any of the bodies I currently own, I'd choose the t1I. I don't really pay too much attention to the XXD models, but I mean what advantage does even the 50D have over the t1I? faster framers per second? little better ISO at high levels?

But would it be worth upgrading from an XSi to a T1i? I primarily want a faster frame rate and the T1i doesn't provide that at all in comparison to my XSi.
