Thanks Lurker. I figured the foam should work great as long as the resin doesn't attack the foam. I'll definetly be doing a test piece first, but I don't think it'll be a problem once sealed with elmers glue or something similar.

so you want to see a eigen bolt in carbon? lol.

Actually, CF is almost identical in density to a certain other material we've discussed...but it is significantly stronger and baller as hell.

There has only been one other carbon fiber gun someone made but it was only a cocker body. I don't believe he ever made a CF frame or other pieces like you.
Best of luck

I don't believe it was all carbon fiber though. I'm pretty sure he just took a cocker body and turned down the lower and upper tubes and put a carbon sleeve over them, and re joined the two together using a laminate of carbon sheets. So the core was still aluminum.

Little bit of an update. I've been trying to get the interior surface smooth enough for an oring to seal up against it. I tried filling the interior with resin and reinserting the mandrel, but for whatever reason it still didn't leave a nice mirror finish. So next I think I'm going to fill it with resin again, and try reaming it out. If that doesn't work, I may scrap this body and try a different infusion method for the first layer of carbon. I'd also add the SFT oring right from the start this time.

Good stuff man and if you could make the engine for this beast carbon fiber as well that'd be pure epic haha. What exactly is supposed to be carbon as of now? Body, frame, trigger, grips i'm assuming, feedneck? Also are you thinking about using the stiffi metal free barrel? Since you essentially trying to involve as little metal as possible in your project. 2 more things haha. What about a reg and ASA as well?

well as of right now i'm just trying to get the body/feedneck done and functioning. once I get it done i'll probably start working on a frame, trigger, and grips.

for the barrel i'll either use my deadlywind or I may custom make one.

reg and asa will be off the shelf items.

Hey if this works you could possibly go into business starting a new wave of carbon markers.

hey if you got the process optimized for mass production im sure there will be a market. **** if people blow 1200 on a gun alone and then hundreds more on upgrades and gear i think that people would buy

little update. haven't gotten too much done over the holiday for obvious reasons. BUT, i have decided to make a new body. I did a test piece last night in the effort to try and improve the surface finish of the inside, and I think i've nailed it. It'll need a tiny amount of post sanding, but I think this is the way to go for the first layer of carbon.

So pretty much instead of vacuum infusing the first layer i'll be covering the mandrel in resin and applying the carbon over top of that. it will then be allowed to cure. Then I'll add more structural layers on top of that using the vacuum infusion.

So here's the test piece:

nice and shiny! plus I can add the SFT oring right from the beginning.

that looks great and sounds like the way to go. so you are basically hand laying the carbon with resin instead of infusing it?

with that kind of finish you could easily make bolt kit parts as well, keep up the hard work

yup. the first layer will be hand laid, and the rest will be infused.

so this might be what the final product looks like. I wanted to keep it simple for two reasons. first being I want it to be easy to get the carbon to conform to the contours. Second being I want the carbon to be the highlight, not fancy curves.
