Well i have been wanting to build this for years now, but after spending all last semester working on a vacuum infusion process for my capstone project, I figured it was a good time to get going...

well all that work and this is the outcome....doesn't look like much now, but it will.

I'm still working on getting the larger mandrel out. the front one came out pretty easily. more pictures once I succeeded or break it trying!

I wonder what the internal finish looks like. Would it be overkill to flex hone the internal finish.

asngt007, good question. I haven't quite decided on that yet. I'm probably going to be working on that tonight. I have a hard time being creative when it comes to cosmetics, so i've been putting that off.

Frmr, My original plan was to just use the surface finish left by the mandrel. that's why it was polished all up, but as life would have it there are a few small imperfections in surface. While they might be ok, there is a chance that an oring will sit right on it as well, so I'm thinking about coating the inside with a light layer of resin and reaming it to size. that being said, it is the right diameter right now, and I may hold off on doing it until I have a chance to pressure test it.

So on to what you all want to see....I finally got the large mandrel out through some creative fixtureing and abusing my lathe tailstock by using it as a screw press.

let me first say I HATE Kevlar. I don't care how much breach wear I get, the next one will NOT have any kevlar in sight, and in fact this body is likely to not have an SFT oring just becasue I don't think I can machine it cleanly. AS you can see in the pictures the kevlar didn't really take the resin very well. and that's actually why I was having a hard time removing the large mandrel. a few loose fibers were in between the mandrel and the pushrod I was using and every time I would push it would try and pull the entire front of the laminate down with it. I ended up sanding the kevlar down a bit so my push rod could fit through, but ended up fraying the hell out of it in the process. so i may end up sanding as much kevar out as possible and making a carbon sleeve to go in there instead.

I HATE working with kevlar!!!

no it's still usable. I just need to clean up the breach area a bit.

well my plan right now is to get all the air passages and functionality aspects of the marker done, and maybe even tested.

Then my plan would be to apply some expanding foam all around the exterior of the body. this would then be milled down to the rough shape., and sanded to the final shape. then an adhesive like elmers glue or something would be added on top of the foam to fill in all the air packets. it would then be sanded smooth after curing. Then finally, another layer of carbon would be bonded over the sealed foam. once cured it'll be lightly sanded and clear coated for that nice deep finish.

that's the plan right now....If i can think of a design I like, and can get it into CAD.

Were you going to use aluminum for the air passages? or more cf tubing?

Sorry if I'm ruining all your surprises, I'm incredibly fascinated by all this.

yep

and the foam idea, a bit too complicated dude.. why not just coat the internals with resin and THEN sand it

huh? why would I be coating the internals with resin? and how does that apply to the foam?....the foam is for obtaining the exterior cosmetic shape, nothing more.

Man hopefully this will be the sickest marker of all time... What exactly is te guess on weight, rate of fire, ect. Yet? Or is it too soon? I would assume the efficiency and fire rate will be similar to a shocker?

thanks. i hope it turns out well too! stats should be very similar to a shocker since it's using the shocker engine. efficiency might be a little different as the air passages will be a little larger, thus requiring a higher dwell. i'm also considering not having an SFT ring with would reduce efficiency a little. although I'm sure if I spoke with lurker I could make myself a eigen bolt to help out. maybe even in carbon fiber!

but the point of this project isnt really for efficiency, ROF, or even weight savings. I'm purely doing this because I want to see if I can, and to my knowledge no one else ever has...

Whoa how did I miss this??

CS900, you are a SICK man. The foam shaping should work perfect, most of the custom fenders etc. I see done (with fiberglass, granted) use that lay-up technique.

Cannot wait to see this badass body.
