I'm nearing the end of my sophomore "year" (my school is on a quarterly schedule) and figured I could be of assistance to any prospective advertisers or anyone that is curious about the "other side" of all the bull**** you see on TV and whatnot. Ask away.

Not trying to be a douche or anything.. but why should we give a **** if you're an advertising major?
You shouldn't. However, the engineering and liberal art majors have a threads so I fail to see how this is any less legitimate.

that being said, do you like it?
I think it's all in how you approach it. Personally, I think the best advertising that which speaks to the consumer with elegant simplicity, almost passiveness, connects with the consumer on a personal level, and makes the consumer think/feel (Nike is a very good example)rather than that which incessantly forces itself on the consumer. I like it a lot.
What is your favorite thing about advertising? I really want to go into marketing/advertising, for sports particularly, what schools did you research/decide on?

I think my favorite thing is being able to create things that have the ability to affect people and illicit a response. I enjoy that advertising utilizes both "scientific" and artistic elements to achieve a goal--it is art at work.

To make a long story short, I didn't. The whole thing was, for lack of a better term, an accident. Fortunately, I grew to like it and, from what I've been told, I'm decent at it. I am looking into Virginia Commonwealth University's Master's program though (I've been told it's very good).

I take a mix of business/marketing-related courses and design courses with a few interdisciplinary courses thrown in (photography comes to mind).
For example, last quarter, I took:
Economics: Plain ol' economics. Persuasion and the Consumer: Learning how to gain insight about the consumer and using that insight to reach the consumer more effectively. Branding: Building a successful brand identity from the ground up (actually a lot more difficult than it sounds) Interactive Advertising: Learning how to use interactive media for advertising purposes (social networking, rich media, etc.) and the impact "new media" has on advertising/marketing.
and for the upcoming quarter, I have:
Marketing Concepts: Slightly more in-depth marketing strategy stuff. Advertising Copy Writing: Learning to write effective copy. Basic Web Design: Pretty much self-explanatory. Computer Illustration: An advanced-ish Adobe Illustrator class for non-Graphic Design majors.

I've definitely considered Advertising, but I'm scared that there's not much money to be made in it. Is there?
There's something about advertising that really interests me, its something to do with getting people's attention, and convincing them that your **** is the best **** really sounds pretty damn cool.

At what point do you lose your soul? Is that after you get a degree, or when you get a job?
I need a real-life adblock plus.
I don't see any reason why one would have to sacrifice one's integrity to be successful in advertising. Unfortunately, the ruthless, sales-driven people ruin it for everyone.

Salary depends on what you're doing and how good you are at doing it. If you put out **** work, you'll get precisely that in return.

I am definatley considering advertising as my major if I go to university of Tennessee, because I will get the in state tuition, I'm notan artistic person per se, and the director of the communications college said that UT's advertising program is more buisness oriented than art oriented.
My question is, would advertising be a major that someone who is more looking at the business and communication aspect rather than the actual artistic aspect, be an interesting and worthwhile major?
Sorry if this is a crazy question, it's 4 in the morning and my mind is running wild haha

There are many more business people in advertising then there are artistic people--the only part of advertising that demands a high degree of artistic ability is creative and that only accounts for a small portion of the advertising process. Account management, account planning, and media planning are all more business oriented--interacting with clients, strategics, and whatnot. A degree in adverting advertising will equip you with an understanding of and, to some extent, the ability to do all of the above--in my program, there are classes focus on each of the four "parts" of advertising and other classes that encompass all four "parts" and help you gain a better understanding of the entire process from brainstorming a creative strategy to creative execution to implementation. It is then up to you to decide which area you want to go into based on your strengths and what you like doing.
Slightly off-topic:
I love Dan Wieden's bit near the end.

Im not sure if i should go into marketing or advertising.
I think Im more of an artistic person than a business person.
I love being creative and coming up with ideas.
However, I keep reading posts about people saying advertising is such a narrow field, and people who does major and get a job in this field move unto marketing later on. Also because they usually only deal with sales?
