The local flea market near me has the best heat shrink tubing around. Beats the pants off of that crap that Radio Shack sells calling it heat shrink wrap. Stuff shrivels up about 2% then starts to melt.

Try going to a hobby store, they might have what you need. Hobby stores that sell r/c stuff usually have interesting parts, tools and electronics.

btw - I've got the uni t almost completely piggybacked on the UL board. only thing I'm missing is the buttons. pic soon.

edit - soon as i can find my usb cable for my camera....

edit 2 - gonna try the mq without the cap...
this guy runs it without. then again that is a pump... we'll see what happens.

soo, I'd like to say right now that unless I just got lucky, boards are much stronger than I thought they were. I mutilated mine, trying to sink the uni-t in farther so I would be able to get flat panel grips from SPD... (great finishing touch in mind) and she seems to be holding up fine. *knock on oak*

triple post!!

soo, got the buttons working. I think the copper traces on the board just couldn't handle the power or something... IDK. either way, I cut it, and now both buttons work properly.

some bad news though: in re-soldering my LED with some proper sized heatshrink, I accidentally burnt the red LED. which is unfortunate, but oh well. Parents are going to CR tomorrow so hopefully they'll be able to find a 3color LED there.

Radio shack didn't have anything. So I'm just going to order them from SD (I'm going to buy an extra or two) and pick up a replacement wiring harness, as I have a closed bolt board and can use the board in another project.

The ul board was set up the exact same as the membrane, but it didn't work. So I cut the wire trace and everything works just fine.

Btw if I'm re-saying anything it's cuz I'm on my iPod and can't see the posts in the thread.

I'm very excited to see this finished. I talked to Collin from DW about this marker several months ago and he said he had a tough time achieving very good FPS consistency. How did you plan to overcome this? Maybe you already said earlier, but I couldn't find it.

I have a feeling the valve he had may have been at play, as this doesn't seem much different than an MQ'd cocker.... sans spring. I see the spring as any other spring in a marker - it needs to be broken in.

I'm going to tackle that problem when/if it comes around.

I have a feeling that going with a lighter spring may help with velocity consistency some because the MQ was originally designed as a cocker valve - which presents much less back pressure than opening a secondary valve before full venting like we are asking it to do. Considering the balancing act that an MQ is pulling off to begin with, I would not be surprised if it has issues dealing with higher than anticipated backpressure. Colin had his cycling amazingly quickly, he may have opted for a heavier than necessary spring to aid in a fast bolt return, but on the other end it could have been an ultra light spring to minimize valve dwell and get it open quickly, that won't consistently start to return. Either way, I suspect a good spring choice will be critical for it to work consistently. I never had any consistency issues with mine, but it was also fed from a sealed dump chamber with a super light spring in the bolt train, so backpressure and secondary dwell measures were of little to no concern.

I hadn't thought of the backpressure on the valve.... and I made my own spring. I'll have to see how it works the way it is. my spring seems kinda heavy now that I think about it. I'll have to get some measurements off it and see if i can order something from mcmaster carr.

I have had bad luck with mcmaster-carr for finding really light springs, I really wish you could search a range of all spring properties there. Honestly, I went to the local hardware store, and grabbed 2 of every spring that had a chance in hell of working. I'm sure mcmaster has a dozen good candidates, but they are a pain to navigate for springs.

yea, doubt our local windsor or rona will have anything like that.

and wow is mcmastercarr ever difficult to deal with for springs

like IDC about wire size, just gimme a spring that'll work!

Well, it will be interesting to see. Any actual CAD files of this around yet? I'm a student machinist currently and would love to try something like this.
