with too much contrast you lose detail in the shadows and highlights.

That's quite fine with me when art is more important than documentation.

not sure. Off the top of my head it looks like I grayscaled it. Messed with luminance until I liked it.

The shot started off shooting in M I believe. Then up in clarity and a then just messed with it.

Get LR if you don't have it and mess around.

With the B&W ones I don't care about losing detail in the darks. Most of the time when I do that I'm eliminating noise and just creating contrast. It was either underexposed already because of the lighting or I make a crappy picture into a contrasty B&W. It's just what I like/enjoy.

And if you notice a lot of them are just snapshots that I do that way.

I love contrast as well, my ex (photo major) always complains that I put too much contrast in my b&w but I think it brings a different feeling out of them.

Then again, she is an intensely traditional photographer so she doesn't like a lot of digital pp anyway, or color ****ing as she calls it.

Lol. I have gotten to the point where I do what I want. Most of the people I show them to have no idea about any of this stuff. Here's a "detail" B&W and PP color:

I much prefer that type of conversion. It still preserves some contrast and keeps it black and white, not black and grey, but isn't blindingly white and black

I like that B&W too. I just do different things for different photos. In that one the lighting is good all around (I did use a flash) and I didn't lose details in the black from RAW.

A lot of the overly contrasty B&W is where a lot of things are lost (even in RAW) and a lot of noise is present. So there's different times I use it more than others.

In the one above I think the way I did it works well for that photo but might not for others.

Here's off topic but is the way I view things:

Looking at a digital picture is WAAAAAY different than seeing it in print. I tend to process things the way I want if I were to print it on 8x10 +.

One thing I would challenge people to do is to take their favorite shot and get it printed 8x10+

I got a 20x24 of my son making that splash and it looks awesome in print. More so than looking at it on a computer screen. The detail is phenomenal in larger prints.

compression? As in quality? I uploaded most on FB and I'm not going to pay for a pro flickr account (almost out of room) since I have my own website.

As far as what they look full size, use your imagination. They are pretty decent even at that compression.
