First update to the produced classic Ion conversion kit version. I designed a better way of retaining the rear fitting and the firing piston that has a few advantages.
- The piston is 40% lighter than before
- The chamber is devolumized slightly which helps both efficiency and reducing shootdown at higher rates of fire
- The kit is less obtrusive on the outside of the gun visually
- no more need to remove the back end of the body like when doing a BOB mod, a simple hole for some tubing will suffice for a barbed fitting, smaller cutout for a push to connect elbow
So unless someone is bent on having the version with the extended donut, all subsequent kits will be made with this style back end - the donut and rear plug are no more.
This is the extent of the kit outside of the firing can, except for the fitting.
Original piston on the left, Version 2 on the right.
Piston guide visible inside the can.
The front of the piston guide is hexed so you can install it with a 1/2" nut driver.
Breakdown of the guide. I will be adding an additional air groove and hole in the center piece to aid in maximizing airflow.
Back side of the outer portion of the guide. O-ring seals against the back inside of the can forcing air to move between the 2 pieces that the piston rides in and into the chamber only when the piston is forward.

Cool.
Any efficiency numbers using the 13ci yet?

I don't have a 13ci yet, so sadly no.

This has kinda been bugging me this last little bit...
The new piston seals against the back of the bolt carrier instead of the front right?
edit - yoda, do you mind if I PM you with a couple questions not regarding this?

The piston seals the same way it always has. I'll generate a cut away view later to make it more clear. In general, the piston no longer slides inside the rear bore of the firing can - I created a new bore that sits within the can itself.
Never a problem to ask questions, fire away.

Im assuming using this with a body other than the stock one is kinda out of the question, right? I mean as far as BOB goes. This would be sweet with a stage 5 or something. What about use with a foehn body?

Not out of the question at all, just takes some custom pieces. I've done a one off for someone here with a GCPB body (identical to one of the stage 5 bodies, there were 2 variants with the same name) that I will post shots of once the person has received it.
Same body as this (pic is of one owned by Lotus)

Nice, this is pretty interesting. Excuse the questions but this has peaked my interest. lol
What boards support the eye coding needed for them to work properly?
This wouldnt work properly with an LPR modded ion, would it? Probably a stupid question but i dont totally understand the design of this yet.
Im sure ill think of more questions soon. lol

board currently doesnt exist and no it wouldnt work with an lpr (unless the lpr was cranked all the way up) or you go yoda to make you one with a larger piston surface.

Damn, so theres not a universal board out there with proper eye logic for it?
Kinda figured the LPR thign was a no go based on the design but i had to ask.
Hmmm, more and more interesting.

LPR should actually work fine, but it won't give you any advantages aside from literally a couple extra shots per tank just because the air you vent to atmosphere will be a lower pressure. Won't help to soften up the cycle at all. Really a waste for this system.
Eye logic on a closed bolt UTB should work fine, but it needs to use an alternate method of powering the solenoid assuming you use a MAC 33 as most people do for a variety of reasons (cheap, tiny, and high pressure rating). Spitlebug posted a diagram several years ago about using a mosfet with a Chaos board to power higher draw solenoids than the board could support - that same schematic should work with those. Problem being that a UTB will only output the power needed to drive a MAC33 on one of the 2 solenoid outputs - and it is not the output that you need triggered for this. Of course, if you found a lower power draw normally open 3-way solenoid valve, it should work without any modifications.
Other closed bolt boards could probably be made to work as well, I just don't know for certain.

Ill have to look into that. MAC is actually located right next door to me so i may be able to get some help. Id love to try this out but id really want eyes.
I wonder if an excal board would work. Its rather large though. Again, im just tossing out thoughts, my knowledge base in that area is limited.
Its good to hear the LPR would work. Even though its useless i love to tinker and have somewhat odd setups (thus my interest in a closed bolt ion). lol

If you can convince MAC to make a 200psi rated solenoid valve that operated well below their current offerings of 4 watts, you would be a hero to us all.

The worst they can do is laugh at you and mock you as you walk out of the building. Certainly worth a try.

lol, that would be kinda funny.
So anyway, eyes arent an option unless a alternate board or alternate solenoids are found that work.
Nothing good ever comes easy. lol

Correct, unless you know how to overwrite the embedded programming on a stock board to make it work that way.

Will Roberson from Tadao said the AKA Ebisu board would work as long as you put a 6800uF capacitor (same size used on spyders) across the positive and ground terminals from the battery. Of course, you then run into space problems (or id imagine you would).

Also, i dont think it will ever fit. Without the capacitor the board is about .986" x 2.859" x ~.261" thats in inches width by legth by height.
I dont have any sort of ion frame in my posession so i dont know for sure.

Frame adapters are relatively simple.
