Reg is slow to recharge, very inconsistent

Hi All - I just picked up a used '09 mini and took it out this past weekend but I think there's a problem.

I screw in the tank, set the reg to 190, then went to the chrono. My first shot comes to 283, then the next series of shots are down to 250ish. I watch the gauge on the reg and notice that after the first shot, pressure drops to around 110 and takes several seconds to come back up to 190. On top of that, if I let the gun sit long enough, it'll slowly creep past 200 psi.

I thought it might have been some sort of inconsistency due to having an aftermarket bolt/spring so I put the stock pieces back in but get the same results. The dwell is also at the stock setting.

I don't think it's my tank - 68/4500 Crossfire LP

Any ideas?

I would test it using a tank that you know works well. If you are still getting the same results then you know that it is regulator on the marker that is bad. It certainly sounds like it is a problem with the regulator on the gun.

Just a little something to look at though, remove the asa from grip frame and check it all over to make sure that there is no gunk or debris in it. That can cause some problems with the reg working properly.

I would try another tank first before getting into the reg.

That's why I posted that before posting to check the reg.

Is your tank screwed in all the way?

A tank that isn't screwed in all the way matches your symptoms.

This usually happens on HP tanks, but it still could happen with a LP tank. Lower your reg pressure before you try it in case someone raised the pressure to make up for the starvation.

I'm not sure, would that still cause a reg creep problem?

That has nothing to do with the recharge rate of the regulator or the pressure.

I know I am just agreeing with you. It makes you feel better about trying things when you see multiple people say to check something.

Also if your store has any ndz twist on/offs you can test your gun with one on to see if it's the reg or the tank.

It wouldn't cause both problems, but both problems aren't necessarily from the same source.

However, since you are so eager to nit-pick every one of my posts, I'll leave it all up to you.

Regards.

I just asked if you thought that a tank not being screwed in would do that. Didn't intend for it to be nitpicking.

However I do agree, you should check to make sure the tank is screwed in all of the way; I for some reason saw reg creep and threw the tank as a contributor out of the proverbial window.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I'll try a known working tank and backoff the reg adjustment screw so I know for sure that the tank is screwed into the ASA all the way, then adjust the screw till pressure reaches 190. I'll leave the gun alone for a few minutes and recheck the pressure. If that looks okay then I'll see if the pressure drop-off problem still exists. I sure hope it was as simple a problem as not screwing it in fully.

Pballin when I my gun wasn't recharging I lubed the bolt and it worked fine. I know bolt =\= tank problems. But still I thought it could help.

Screwing it in all of the way is a huge thing as far as recharge rate goes. As for the reg creep, it can be a few things.

It certainly could not hurt, that is for sure.

While I do appreciate that, Evan is one of the only people on here that has attempted and even come close to producing an on/off regulator for the mini. That's nothing to be taken lightly, as a lot of people have attempted but have not even come close to doing it.

It certainly would not be bad to have him help out.

I just had this issue on a Mini I picked up. It's probably just a poorly adjusted regulator. After you successfully rule out the tank, let us know. Resetting the reg is pretty simple.

Understood, but to command respect in that manner is simply nonsensical. His hard work has yet to come to fruition and thus is a washout so it holds no water with me.
