what barrel for my ion?
im looking to buy a new barrel for my ion. its all stock except for the fire bolt, qev and a clamp on feed neck. i run an empire loader. the gun is set for 15 balls per second and the velocity is 280. i have a stock barrel now and im just curious what can i expect from a good aftermarket barrel and what you guys are using and what kind of improvement have you seen over the stock barrell. thanks.

Really depends on your price range. Also, what kind of tank are you running?

efficiency with a better bore to paint match. if you are looking at a CF barrel you might want to go with a DW barrel and get an inset kit with it.

You can make it more accurate. You cant have longer range unless you buy a flatline or apex barrel and put backspin on the ball.(shooting a 14 in barrel at 300fps will only result in 2 more inches than shooting a 12 in barrel at 300fps)
The reason for different barrels is to have a different bore size, the closer your bore size is to the size of the ball, the more accurate it will be. Have a close bore to paint match could also increase efficiency. I would reccomend with your price range, buying the dye ul barrel and buying a couple of different backs. Maybe a .688 and a .692.

I have found more accuracy and better grouping with my Smart Parts All American 2 piece barrel. I bought the 16" and I am glad I bought it. At first I didn't think it was gonna be much of a difference BUT the barrel puts a little spin on the ball and BAMMM! It totally silences the shot also. No regrets. It cost me $64.95 from actionvillage.com

the barrel and some different backs sounds good. my son has a barrel kit for his autococker and he uses it for different sized balls at different fields.
for instance we did judge dredd a few weeks back and thier field paint just rolled out of my barrel. he changed bore sizes and his gun shot real nice and straight. it worked real well for him.
thanks for the info guys.

your accuracy willl be increased, the gun may be quieter, and efficiency.
get a barrel kit. i recomend maybe a full freak kit
or save some paint next time you play and go to your local shop and find inserts to match.

Probably the best barrel kit out there is the oribium 3 (from what I hear). If you can find one pick it up. I think they are somewhere around 180 or 200. However I love my redz pepperstickz. Full kit for 120. You can also get a kit with longer tips to change your barrel length. Maybe a 12 or 14 inch for speedball and a 16 inch for woods or whatever you want to do. You'll see a noticeable increase in accuracy and it will shoot better through breaks which you may even get less of. I typically don't experience any notable difference in efficiency, however, I do notice the quieter sound signature. Your velocity may increase also allowing you to lower your psi/dwell.

trust me on this one. freaks are always going to be the best. one because you can have a large variety of inserts...... but a lot of different companies have that, and most barrels shoot relatively the same accuracy. so what makes the freak better is that when you change guns you can keep your freak kit together and all you have to do to change threads is just change the back you wont need to change all your backs as if you had the dye UL or something.

How is that possible ? The ports don't spin the ball, they just allow the air to escape.

Spinning the ball is the opposite of what you want to do with a paintball.
Think of what happens when you spin a baseball, with a solid core, and the seams catch the air around it. What happens? It curves.
Paintballs will do the same thing if there is excessive spin, and since they have an unstable liquid core, it's not exactly predictable as to how much or where they'll curve.

I've had my ion for 4 years and the barrel I have found to work the best is a stiffi 14". It lowers the overall weight of my gun and its extremely accurate.
