can you tophat mod the dm9?

Has anyone done this yet?
Can you actually do this, and if so did you notice any major differences?

I am very interested in doing this to mine.

i believe a moderator told me that the new milling in the dm9 would go against doing it, so it would be pointless and maybe make the gun worse. I was also intrested in doing the 530 and top hat but when i recieved my dm9 it was like my dm6 with 530 top hat and orange bolt, so they have made major improvements. All in all, i wouldnt do anything man, just wait until the billy wing bolt comes out for the dm9.

Yes.
The tophat mod would only defeat the purpose of the milling that Dye did around the tophat to increase the volume of the air dump chamber. This helps the DM9 shoot with lower OP, which makes it shoot smoother. IMO, if you put a tophat mod on a DM9, you basically turned your DM9 into a stock PM8. Not saying that's bad thing, but that is basically what you are doing.

Erayser; Any DM with a tophat mod will become like a PM8.
They made the bolt shorter on the DM9 (smaller chamber), which means that they would have to mill out the body on the inside, to keep the operating pressure as low as earlier. Therefore, doing the tophat mod will have the same effect on a DM9 as for ex. a DM6.
I'm pretty sure the Operating Pressure on the DM9 is the same as the earlier DM's, but I have not compared them...

I would'nt do the mod though, as it will make the operating pressure higher, which ruins the point of owning a Matrix.

I agree with you... but I just want to clarify one thing. The reason I mentioned the DM9, in particular, becoming like a PM8, is because the DM9 and the PM8 bolts are exactly the same.
http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.p...1#post58896951

What separates the DM9 from the PM8 is the milling in the DM9 body around the tophat section to increase the volume of the dump chamber.... giving you lower OP.

Doing the tophat mod on DM9 cancels out what separates a DM9 from a PM8.

okay i see. only problem i see with the BW bolt is its extremely picky on settings. we tried to help a kid with his IM dm9 at my shop and we couldent do anything to make the gun stop kicking like a .45 as soon as you lowered the LPR the gun would drop off dramatically. i mean im sure if i had one and the time to sit and tech it i could make it amazing but my DM is fine how it is. i just wanted better effeciancy

kick isn't always a result of the LPR. Sometimes its a result of the HPR being too high... I would wager that's more the case than the bolt/LPR causing it. Place the LPR at a place where it cycles, dwell 18-20 and you'll probably have to lower your HPR to get within limits.

you're right, I stopped reading when I was 7 and am now completely illiterate.
Your gun, is fine, but doesn't have the BW bolt in it, so its moot. Mine does. My gun also doesn't kick like a 45, nor is it picky with its settings. It doesn't drop off dramatically when I screw with the LPR. You only mentioned that you tried lowering the the LPR. No mention of Dwell/ HPR manipulation. No mention of lube choice (about the drop off). I provided another scenario, that would cause it to kick. Not only that but too high of an HPR will cause more kick than too high of an LPR.
No need to get defensive. Go try it and see if it works. If not, there's a bad o-ring causing excessive drag (thus the drop off at a lower LPR setting.)

Please don't intigate or insult other PbNation members with un-necessary comments. This thread is about putting a tophat mod on DM9, and what the differences are with the mod. Please stay on topic. If you guys want to talk about tuning a DM9 with a BW bolt, please start a new thread. I hope all of you are "reading" this clearly.

Matrix guns are not known for efficiency. If anything, try the tophat mod... but don't expect any signifcant efficiency gains. Keep in mind that will increase OP, but you may not notice to much of a difference. PM8 owners don't complain to much about kick.

why should anybody do a tophat mod on a DM9?? I´m getting 10 pots and a loader out of 68/45. so it´s more efficient than my Geo and my NXT. Overall it´s nearly a box of paint, what do you want more?

That's correct gogobubi... why the people it's so paranoid with efficiency of the DM9 gun? if your in a tournament you must to go to fill station every time before enter to the field, and put some 4000 psi on the thank...
Just worry for setting the gun until you feel it's Ok, it take some time before you'll accomplished the settings, but when you're done it will be know the amazing marker that u have...
And by the way, remember that the marker doesn't make you a best player... so worry for make drills, and drills, and drills over an over again, to improve you skills and get the more from your DM9.
