Paintballers charged in Park Forest

Paintballers charged in Park Forest
Comments

May 5, 2009

By Becky Schlikerman, staff writer
Five pranksters have been charged with criminal damage to property for shooting at 10 cars with paintballs and BB guns in Park Forest, authorities said.

Their arrest came days after the SouthtownStar reported at least eight Chicago Heights residents had reported they, or their property, had been shot at with paintballs.

The five teens from Chicago Heights and South Chicago Heights were arrested just after midnight April 26 by Park Forest police at Brookwood Drive and Lincoln Highway. A witness saw a black Dodge Dakota driving down Elm Street shooting BBs at parked cars, Park Forest Deputy Police Chief Mike McNamara said.

Charged are Anthony Gutierrez, 17, 194 W. 27th Place, South Chicago Heights; Jonathan Hernandez, 18, 212 W. Lincoln Highway, Chicago Heights; Miguel Vasquez, 19, 554 W. 15th Place, Chicago Heights; Alan Letesma, 18, 1330 Vincennes Ave., Chicago Heights; and Cruz Gutierrez, 18, 321 W. 16th St., Chicago Heights.

Park Forest police stopped the car a short time after the witness's report.

"They all admitted driving the car and firing at cars," McNamara said.

McNamara said it's possible these five are responsible for the paintball attacks in Chicago Heights, but neither Park Forest nor Chicago Heights police could say for sure.

He added Park Forest police didn't know there had been any paintball incidents in Chicago Heights.

Since the teens' arrests, there have been no more reports of paintball shootings in Chicago Heights.

Chicago Heights Police Lt. Michael Romano said his department has been in contact with Park Forest police but he hasn't started an investigation yet.

would be better if they had no connection to paintball whatsoever, so that people would realize the guys who play for real arent douchebags and we could distance ourselves from this ****.

One kid is under 18, his name should not have been published publicly,
and there is never a reason to publish their home addresses on a site
like this. There most likely is going to be dumb ***** trackin them down
and there is going to end up being another arrest.

Again its great to see police getting the bad guys...
I too wish it wasnt at the expense of the sport and local paintball community
but the fact that now anybody can find these retards is not a good thing.
That information is from the newspaper verbatim. That is information published by the police publicly.

In the state of Illinois you can be charged with as much as Attempted Manslaughter for shooting a paintball at someone not wearing proper eye protection. So remember using a real gun on unwilling people will be the same charge.

Hahaha.

But who cares? In the greater spectrum of things, a few idiots shooting cars is not going to "harm" paintball.

People use golf clubs and baseball bats all the time with the intention of beating some ***, but we're not going to see the demise of baseball/golf anytime soon because of it.

these werent paintball players. these were guys who went and got spyders from walmart as well as the bb guns.

They are in no way connected to the sport of paintball except for the single fact they had a marker.

If I grab a baseball bat and beat the **** out of a car, am I a baseball player?

The media typically doesn't mention that information... they see paintball and they see a crime, so they make it look like paintballers are criminals. This inaccurate style of reporting is the same thing that puts invalid information in the minds of non-participants. What do you think made that trustee in Lake Zurich feel so opposed to having a paintball field in town? This did.

Just a bunch of stupid kids with no common sense doing stupid things. What if someone would have thought it was a drive by (in those neighborhoods that would be my first conclusion to bangs and broken windows at night) and shot back? Kids need to learn to respect other people's property and not be stupid.
