if a player draws a 1 for 1 penalty, the ref pulls that player, PLUS his closest buddy.
example: Player cusses, ref pulls the offenders armband, makes the "fist pump" signal, then pulls the offending players closest team mate.
the more severe 2 for 1, or 3 for 1 penalties are for cheating, and other more offensive penalties.

Doesn't have to be the closest buddy, can be any teammate anywhere on the field.

correct... but it's pretty common practice for a ref to pull the players nearest the offender - rather than run all the way across the field to pull a player furthr away

I pull the closest because I'm lazy but Dan Perez always told me (back in Dynasty's heyday) that "If I saw Greenspan playing on, I'd pull him, then I'll go look for Ollie."

Now thats funny..."Then I'll go look for Ollie."
Yea, to sum it up 2 for 1 and 3 for 1 are fairly rare for the most part but are called in unusual situations.

Depends on the league. Some leagues do not give the ref the option of who to pull and they require the ref pull the closest player.

generally its the closest person in site
because if you go looking for a player
the team will look for anything to yell at
i reffed a big tourny and i have to pull 3 and it happen to be the back center and back left and d1 and after they lost that game they asked why i pulled them
and it was because those 3 players were in my vision,
you have to call the penalty and do it all fast

1 for 1 is generally for playing on. Different leagues and refs define this differently.
2 for 1 is generally playing on in such a fashion where the game is changed.
3 for 1 is wiping a hit.
