homework

Around 1631, shortly after the settlement in Jamestown was established, a trading post was set up by William Claiborne that grew into what is now known as Maryland. By 1632, King Charles I granted land near the Chesapeake Bay to Cecilius George Calvert…better known as Lord Baltimore. He called the land Maryland after King Charles’s wife: a debt of gratitude for the financing Baltimore had received.

Lord Baltimore founded Maryland with the intention that it be a place of ultimate religious freedom. At the time, England strictly governed religion, making everyone attend one church- the Church of England. Lord Baltimore was a devout Catholic, and he wanted freedom to practice his faith without punishment.

Maryland was one of the first colonies to establish a government and set of religious values. The Act Concerning Religion passed in 1649 was the first of its kind, allowing religious freedom for all people in the settlement. Many flocked to Maryland because of this law. Annapolis, then known as Providence, was the nation’s capitol in the late 1700s, and also served as the birthplace for the Constitutional Convention.

Because religion played such a large part in the lives of Maryland’s inhabitants, it was an often practiced thing in the free time of these colonists. Yet despite its seemingly strict morals, it was one of the few colonies that allowed slavery. Slavery became legal in Maryland by a 1664 law that allowed plantation owners to own slaves for life once bought.

Maryland’s economy was based mainly around two things- manufacturing and agriculture. Annapolis and Baltimore were both bustling cities of trade and also large centers for shipbuilding and iron works. At the same time, rural Maryland got its cash inflow through corn, wheat, rice, and indigo used for dyes. With two powerful port towns and active agricultural growth, Maryland was one of the top producing colonies.
